UJ does not use one set of requirements for all its courses. Each programme page on the University of Johannesburg website sets its own minimum APS, subject levels and non-accepted subjects. Use this page to understand how UJ’s requirements work, then check the programme you want. Applications for the 2027 intake are open until 31 October 2026 at 12:00, and UJ accepts no late applications.

If you are asking which UJ courses do not require maths, there is no single maths-free list to point to. Some programmes accept Mathematical Literacy, usually at a higher APS, while others state that it is not accepted. The sections below show how to tell the difference.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

For most UJ undergraduate programmes you will be assessed on:

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements

UJ publishes a course page for each qualification at uj.ac.za/university-courses, and that page is the authority for the APS and subject levels. The programme pages differ widely. For the 2027 intake, the Bachelor of Nursing sets a minimum APS of 30 with English at level 5 and Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences at level 4. The LLB in Law sets 31 with Mathematics or 32 with Mathematical Literacy. The BCom in Information Systems sets 26.

UJ also publishes an Undergraduate Prospectus for 2027 and an APS calculator, both linked from the UJ undergraduate admissions page. To see what UJ offers, browse the course pages by faculty on the UJ website rather than relying on a list copied elsewhere.

Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements

UJ calculates the APS as the sum of the achievement ratings of your six best school subjects, excluding Life Orientation. The six must include the required programme subjects. UJ is also explicit about subjects it does not accept. Many science and health programmes require Mathematics, and their pages state that Mathematical Literacy is not accepted.

The Bachelor of Nursing accepts neither Mathematical Literacy, Technical Mathematics nor Technical Science. The BCom in Information Systems requires Mathematics at level 4 (50%), accepts Technical Mathematics at level 4 (50%) in its place and does not accept Mathematical Literacy.

Which UJ courses do not require maths?

No UJ page lists courses by whether they need maths. The LLB in Law and BA Law accept Mathematical Literacy at level 4 (50%) with a minimum APS of 32, against 31 with Mathematics at level 3 (40%). BCom Law and the Bachelor of Nursing do not accept Mathematical Literacy. Check the individual programme page for the subject rule and the APS that applies to you. If you took Mathematical Literacy, also ask UJ which programmes in the faculty you are interested in are open to you.

Documents and Application Requirements

Applications are made through UJ’s online system, and the UJ undergraduate admission page explains how to apply. Applying is free, and you may make only two study choices per academic year. You cannot change them once you submit.

South African applicants with no previous studies do not have to upload supporting documents. Transfer applicants must submit their academic record, and international applicants must submit a certified passport and school results. UJ also requires applicants to declare any previous studies, even if they were cancelled before completion.

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations

Popular UJ programmes receive far more applications than places, so meeting the minimum APS does not secure a place. UJ also applies extra selection to some programmes: nursing adds an interview and English proficiency, and emergency medical care adds an interview, medical and physical evaluations.

Undergraduate applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026 and close on 31 October 2026 at 12:00. The date you apply on does not affect the outcome, but late applications are not accepted. Grade 12 learners apply with their final Grade 11 results, and final selection happens in January on Grade 12 results. Apply early, and apply to more than one institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What courses are available at UJ?

UJ offers undergraduate programmes across several faculties and colleges. The current list, with each programme’s requirements, is on the course pages of the UJ website. Choose the programme first, then read its APS and subject rules.

Does UJ accept Mathematical Literacy?

It depends on the programme. Some accept it at a higher APS, such as the LLB in Law, while others, such as Nursing and Information Systems, state that it is not accepted.

What APS do I need for UJ?

There is no single UJ APS. Each programme page publishes its own minimum. For example, Nursing is 30, the LLB is 31 or 32, and BCom in Information Systems is 26.

How does UJ calculate the APS?

It adds the achievement ratings of your six best school subjects, excluding Life Orientation, and the six must include the programme’s required subjects. UJ’s frequently asked questions page explains this.

Are there interviews?

Some programmes add selection steps on top of your results. The programme page tells you what applies. Nursing and Emergency Medical Care, for example, both add an interview, and Emergency Medical Care adds medical and physical evaluations.

When do UJ applications open and close?

Undergraduate applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026 and close on 31 October 2026 at 12:00. UJ accepts no late applications.

Do I pay an application fee?

No. All UJ applications are free.
