The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is in Vanderbijlpark and has four faculties: Applied and Computer Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Human Sciences, and Management Sciences. Admission requirements are set per programme in the 2027 Undergraduate Minimum Admission Requirements document, and the application fee for 2027 is R110.
Applications for 2027 opened on 21 May 2026. Apply through the VUT portal linked from the VUT how-to-apply page.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- An NSC that meets the minimum for your chosen qualification
- The subjects and symbols VUT lists for that programme
- A certified copy of your ID (or passport) and of your Grade 11 or latest Grade 12 report
- The R110 application fee, paid on the application portal
- An application submitted before the closing date for your programme
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
Initial selection is based on your final Grade 11 or latest Grade 12 results. The listed minimum subjects and symbols do not guarantee acceptance, and accepting an offer does not guarantee registration.
If you already have final matric results, the application system matches them to the qualifications you are eligible for. If you qualify for both a mainstream and an extended diploma, VUT advises choosing the mainstream programme first.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Subject requirements vary widely between programmes. Examples from the 2027 document:
- Three-year engineering diplomas: an NSC with at least 24 APS points and at least 4 in Mathematics, Physical Science and English.
- Extended (four-year) engineering diplomas: 22 APS points with at least 3 in each of those subjects.
- Diploma in Analytical Chemistry: 4 in English, 4 in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, 4 in Physical Science, three other subjects, and a total of 21 points excluding Life Orientation.
- Diploma in Agricultural Management: 4 in English, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics at 3 or Mathematical Literacy at 4, and Agriculture or Life Sciences at 3, with a total of 21 points (Mathematics) or 22 points (Mathematical Literacy), excluding Life Orientation.
So Mathematical Literacy is accepted for some VUT diplomas, such as Agricultural Management, but not for the engineering diplomas, which list Mathematics.
Documents and Application Requirements
- A certified copy of your South African ID, or passport if you are an international applicant

Proof of address is not compulsory. If you apply using TVET college results, you must email the administrative staff of the relevant department with the Assistant Registrar copied; see the VUT how-to-apply page.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Registration is first-come, first-served and places are limited to a quota per programme, so apply early. Closing dates for 2027 are shown differently on different parts of the VUT how-to-apply page (30 September, 30 October and 31 October for various groups, and 31 July for some programmes), so confirm yours with VUT.
