Safety management course requirements depend on the level you enter at. A first safety management diploma (NQF 6) needs a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a diploma pass, a pass in English or your language of learning, and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy at the level the institution sets. A bachelor’s degree in health and safety management asks for a stronger NSC with Mathematics and Physical Science. Advanced and postgraduate diplomas need a relevant diploma or degree first.
A safety and management course at university level differs from a workplace safety officer certificate: it trains you to plan, manage and audit safety systems, and it takes three years or more to reach NQF 7. Entry Requirements at a Glance
- Unisa Diploma in Safety Management (NQF 6, distance learning): NSC with diploma endorsement, APS of 17, at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning, and 40% in Mathematics or 70% in Mathematical Literacy.
- VUT Diploma: Safety Management: NSC with diploma endorsement, English level 4, another language level 3, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics level 3 or Mathematical Literacy level 4, and a total of 20 points with Mathematics or 21 with Mathematical Literacy (excluding Life Orientation).
- CUT Bachelor of Health and Safety Management (NQF 7, three years, Bloemfontein): NSC with at least 32 points on CUT’s scale and 60–69% (level 5) in English, Mathematics and Physical Science.
- Advanced diplomas (NQF 7): a relevant NQF 6 diploma, such as a safety management diploma for Unisa or a construction, civil engineering or architecture diploma for CPUT’s construction health and safety programme.
- Postgraduate diplomas and honours (NQF 8): an advanced diploma or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
For any undergraduate safety management course, your NSC must carry at least a diploma endorsement. A bachelor’s pass is needed only for a degree, such as CUT’s Bachelor of Health and Safety Management. CUT also accepts a Senior Certificate (before 2008) or the National Certificate (Vocational), and says a higher certificate, advanced certificate or diploma in a cognate field may meet its minimum requirement instead.
Unisa’s diploma is the most flexible entry point. Along with the NSC route, it accepts the old Senior Certificate with set symbols, or any higher certificate from its College of Economic and Management Sciences. If you are 30 or older, have Grade 10 and have five years’ relevant work experience, you can apply through recognition of prior learning (RPL).
At the next level, the requirements depend on what you studied before:
- Unisa Advanced Diploma in Safety Management: an appropriate Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent, or a diploma with a major in a management field. RPL is open to applicants aged 23 or older with five years’ current, relevant experience.
- CPUT Advanced Diploma in Construction Health and Safety: a 360-credit Diploma in Construction, a National Diploma in Building, or an equivalent NQF 6 qualification in civil engineering or architecture.
- Unisa Postgraduate Diploma in Safety Management (NQF 8): an appropriate advanced diploma in safety management or equivalent, or a bachelor’s degree with a management major.
- CUT Postgraduate Diploma in Health and Safety Management (NQF 8): an NQF 7 advanced diploma or bachelor’s degree with enough construction management or construction health and safety management in it.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Which school subjects count depends on the kind of programme. Management-based diplomas, like Unisa’s and VUT’s, accept Mathematical Literacy, but set a higher mark or APS if you take it instead of Mathematics. Programmes rooted in the built environment are stricter. CUT’s degree needs Mathematics and Physical Science at level 5, so Mathematical Literacy will not get you in.
APS is calculated differently at each institution. VUT excludes Life Orientation from its totals, and CUT uses its own scoring scale. Work out your score with the institution’s own method rather than a general APS calculator.
The qualifications fit together as a ladder: diploma (NQF 6), then an advanced diploma or bachelor’s degree (NQF 7), then a postgraduate diploma or honours (NQF 8). Unisa runs the full safety management ladder by distance. The construction route runs through CPUT’s advanced diploma, CUT’s degree and postgraduate diploma, and UJ’s BSc Honours in Construction Health and Safety Management.
Documents and Application Requirements
Every institution named here takes applications online. Typical documents are:
- Your South African ID, or passport for international applicants
- Your Grade 11 or final Grade 12 results, or your NSC
- Academic records and certificates for any diploma or degree you are building on, for advanced and postgraduate entry
- Proof of work experience and a CV if you are applying through RPL
- A SAQA evaluation of any foreign qualification. CPUT asks for this before you submit your application.
Application windows differ. For 2027 study, Unisa takes undergraduate and postgraduate diploma applications from 17 August to 9 October 2026 and charges an R160 application fee once you have a student number. VUT’s general academic closing date is 30 September. Check each programme page for its own dates, because some programmes close earlier.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Meeting the minimums does not guarantee a place. VUT says this in its admission requirements, and Unisa admits qualifying applicants only if space is available. Postgraduate applicants at Unisa who are turned down can appeal on the application portal with an academic and work-experience motivation, but appeals are only considered if the enrolment target has not been met.
Choose between the general and construction routes early. CUT’s degree and CPUT’s advanced diploma are built around the built environment, and CPUT says its graduates can apply for SACPCMP registration.
If you are looking for a safety management course at UJ, note that UJ’s course listings do not include an undergraduate safety management diploma. It offers an online short learning programme (SLP) in Construction Health and Safety Management, open to anyone with an NSC, and a BSc Honours in Construction Health and Safety Management that requires a BSc (Construction) or equivalent NQF 7 qualification. The SLP runs for 15 weeks and UJ lists it with no NQF credits, so it is not a step towards a diploma or degree.
