Nobody may be employed as an educator in South Africa without registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE). The South African Council for Educators Act 31 of 2000 makes registration a condition of employment, and it applies to public schools, independent schools and early childhood development centres alike.
Provisional registration exists for people who cannot yet meet the requirements for full registration — most commonly students on teaching practice, newly qualified teachers awaiting document verification, and foreign educators awaiting qualification evaluation.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
Provisional registration is time-limited and conditional. It is granted for a defined period to allow you to teach while the outstanding requirement is met, and it does not renew indefinitely. Confirm the current validity period, the conditions and the renewal rules directly with SACE, because they are set by the Council and are revised.
Apply early. Registration is a precondition of employment, and appointment cannot proceed without it. Student teachers going on teaching practice generally need it in place before the placement begins, so start at the beginning of the academic year rather than the week before.
Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA before SACE can assess them, and that evaluation takes time and requires the original documents. Foreign educators also need a valid work permit, and SACE registration and immigration status are separate processes that must both be resolved.
Screening is real. SACE checks criminal records, and separately the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 establishes the National Child Protection Register and the Sexual Offences Act establishes the National Register for Sex Offenders. A person listed on either may not work with children. Employers check both.
Registration can be withdrawn. SACE has disciplinary jurisdiction over registered educators and can strike a person from the register for breaches of the Code of Professional Ethics. That is a career consequence, not an administrative one.

Academic requirements depend on the registration category.
- A Bachelor of Education, or a recognised degree or diploma plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, for full registration
- Current enrolment in an approved teacher education programme, for a student teacher
- A qualification evaluated by SAQA as equivalent, for foreign applicants
- Recognition of a qualification obtained before current requirements, assessed by SACE
- Proficiency in the language of instruction of the school
- No APS applies — this is professional registration, not admission to study

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Deal with SACE directly. Applications are made to the Council, and its website and offices are the authoritative source for forms, fees, timeframes and categories. Third parties offering to expedite registration for a fee are not part of the process.
A fraudulent teaching qualification is a criminal matter and it is detected. Qualifications are verified with the issuing institution and with SAQA, and misrepresentation leads to removal from the register, dismissal and prosecution.
Keep your registration current. SACE registration must be maintained, and lapsed registration means you may not be employed as an educator. Keep your contact details current with the Council so renewal notices reach you.
Continuing professional development applies. SACE administers a professional development system for registered educators, and participation is expected of the profession. Confirm the current requirements with the Council.
Employment is a separate process. Public school posts are advertised through provincial education departments in vacancy bulletins, with prescribed application procedures and closing dates. Registration makes you employable; it does not place you.
Nobody can sell you a teaching post. Any offer to secure a school appointment in exchange for payment is fraud. Report it to the provincial education department and the police.
