A critical skills visa is a work visa issued under section 19(4) of the Immigration Act to a foreign national whose occupation is on South Africa’s Critical Skills List. You need an occupation on the list, a job offer from a verifiable employer, a SAQA evaluation of your qualification and, where the law requires it, confirmation from your professional body. Since 18 October 2024 you also need 100 points under the points-based system.

It is not a work-seekers visa, so you cannot apply first and find a job later. Confirm the current checklist with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), because the published checklists are dated and may be updated.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements at a Glance

The DHA Critical Skills Visa page sets out the basics:

Other points can be earned for qualifications, salary, experience, trusted-employer status and official-language proficiency, as set out in the October 2024 notice.

Passport and Travel Document Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the end of your intended stay in South Africa.

Your employer must keep your passport valid for the whole period of your employment. This is a condition of the visa.

Visa and Supporting Document Requirements

The main documents are:

If you are applying with a life partner, you need a notarial agreement showing the relationship has lasted at least two years and that neither of you is party to another marriage or permanent relationship.

Official pages require both the SAQA evaluation and the professional-body confirmation but do not prescribe which comes first.

Financial, Health and Entry Conditions

The medical and police documents above are the health and character checks. A blanket waiver signed on 8 July 2026 (gazetted on 17 July 2026) removed the requirement to submit a medical report for temporary residence visa and permanent residence permit applications. DHA’s own web pages still list it, and it is not confirmed whether the radiological report is also waived, so check the current VFS checklist before you apply. From 17 August 2026 the DHA fee for a work visa, including renewals, is R1 520, according to the gazetted fee regulations. VFS charges a separate service fee, so confirm that amount with VFS Global before you pay.

The visa carries conditions. You may only work in the specific position the visa was issued for, and your employer must develop a plan to transfer skills to a South African. Your spouse and dependent children receive visas valid for no longer than yours.

Visa conditions for critical purpose

The visa is tied to the position it was issued for. The employer must keep your passport valid, cover deportation costs, report non-compliance to DHA and plan the transfer of skills. Validity is up to five years.

How to Prepare or Apply

  1. Check that your occupation is on the current Critical Skills List and that your employer is verifiable.
  2. Get your qualification evaluated by SAQA and confirmation from your professional body where required.
  3. Collect the police, medical and employment documents above.
  4. Lodge the application through a VFS Global centre in South Africa or at the nearest South African mission abroad. If you are already in the country on another visa, apply in person at least 60 days before it expires.

DHA’s published turnaround target for a critical skills visa is four working weeks, for applications submitted in South Africa and processed at head office, per the turnaround times page. This is a target, not a guarantee.

Critical visa application: where to start

Use the VFS Global DHA page or your nearest South African mission. Include your chosen listed occupation, the SAQA evaluation, the professional-body letter, the employer offer and undertakings, police and medical documents, and proof of fee payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a critical skills visa?

It is a section 19(4) work visa for scarce, in-demand occupations on the Critical Skills List, issued for up to five years. You need 100 points, and the listed occupation provides all 100.

What is the difference between a critical skills visa and a critical skills work visa?

Nothing. They are the same visa. The official name is the critical skills work visa.

What if my occupation is not on the list?

You cannot get a critical skills visa. You may instead qualify for a general work visa, which also needs 100 points and a job offer, but from other criteria.

Do I need a job offer?

Yes. DHA states that all critical skills applications must be accompanied by an offer of employment from a verifiable employer. It is not a work-seekers visa.

How can I renew a critical skills visa?

Renewals must be accompanied by an offer or contract of employment. The exception is life and earth sciences, and academics and researchers, who may show proof of financial means instead (renewed every 12 months).

Can my spouse work?

DHA’s pages we checked do not say. Your spouse and dependent children are issued visas valid for no longer than yours, but confirm work rights with DHA or VFS Global.
