A South African student visa is the study visa that Home Affairs issues to a foreign national who has been accepted to study in South Africa. This page covers what it requires, the conditions that stay in force while you study, and what to do about renewal. The rules sit in the Immigration Act and the Immigration Regulations.

The wording below follows the Regulations as updated to 2018. The Department of Home Affairs has not published a newer consolidated version that we could confirm, so check the current rule with Home Affairs or your South African mission before you rely on a figure.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements at a Glance

These conditions apply for the whole period of study.

Passport and Travel Document Requirements

Study visas other than for school learners are issued for the duration of the course you registered for. Your passport must stay valid throughout. Renew it before it expires rather than after, so your visa is not tied to a lapsed document.

The institution also carries obligations. Its Registrar or Principal gives undertakings to Home Affairs, including to provide proof of your registration within 60 days, to report a failure to register within 7 days, and to report a de-registration or completion within 30 days. If you stop studying, Home Affairs will hear about it from the institution.

Visa and Supporting Document Requirements

For a first application, South African missions ask for the following. Exact lists differ between missions, so use the list published by the mission that will handle your application.

On funds, the South African High Commission in Canberra asks for certified bank statements for the last three months, showing at least ZAR 3,000 per month per person. That is one mission’s figure, not a national rule.

For a renewal, the regulations call for a letter from the Registrar or Principal confirming that you need to extend, the institution’s undertakings, proof of medical cover and proof of sufficient financial means.

Financial, Health and Entry Conditions

Medical cover is a continuing condition, not only an application document. It must be renewed every year of your study with a scheme registered under the Medical Schemes Act.

Financial means must be shown again at renewal, so keep your bank statements and any sponsor letter current.

Work is limited. A study visa does not by itself entitle you to work. The Act allows part-time work while studying at a higher education institution, vacation work and authorised practical training, and the Regulations cap part-time work at 20 hours a week.

Overstaying is a serious risk. A pending application protects you only if it was lodged properly and in time. If you think you have overstayed, contact Home Affairs or an accredited immigration practitioner straight away rather than waiting.

A study visa ends when your course ends. If you want to stay and work, you need to apply for a different visa category. Ask Home Affairs which category fits your situation and when to apply.

How to Prepare or Apply

Applications from outside South Africa go through the South African mission, or its VFS Global centre, in your country of residence. Find the mission and its checklist through the Department of Home Affairs. Your institution’s international office deals with Home Affairs regularly and can tell you what it needs from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for a South African student visa?

You need acceptance by a South African institution and its undertaking, police clearance, annual medical cover with a registered scheme, proof of financial means, and medical and radiological reports. Your mission’s checklist is the final word.

What happens if I drop out?

The visa lapses automatically if you fail to register or are de-registered, and the institution must report a de-registration to Home Affairs within 30 days. Speak to the international office before you stop attending.

How far ahead must I renew?

The Regulations, as updated to 2018, require extensions to be lodged in person at least 60 days before the visa expires. Confirm that this is still the rule with Home Affairs.

Can I work on a study visa?

Only part-time at a higher education or FET institution, for no more than 20 hours a week, plus vacation work or authorised practical training as the Immigration Act allows.

Can I renew if I failed a year?

The renewal letter must come from your institution and confirm that you need to extend, so academic difficulty can become an immigration problem. Home Affairs publishes no pass mark that we could find. Talk to your institution and Home Affairs early.

Can I stay and work after graduating?

Not on the study visa. You must apply for a different visa category before it expires. Ask Home Affairs which category applies to you.

Confirm current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs or the South African mission handling your application. See visa requirements and browse all travel and immigration requirements.
