SASSA itself does not give loans. EasyPay Loans for SASSA grant recipients come from a private lender, EasyPay Financial Services (Pty) Ltd (registered credit provider NCRCP633, part of Lesaka Technologies). To qualify, your grant must be paid into an EasyPay Everywhere account in your own name. You also need at least three grant deposits in that account, and you must pass the lender’s credit and affordability checks.

SASSA has said publicly that it does not offer financial services such as loans or funeral cover. Borrowing is a private agreement between you and the lender. Your instalments come out of the same money you rely on for food, transport and school costs, so work out what the loan will cost you each month before you decide whether it is worth it.

Eligibility Requirements at a Glance

For EasyPay loans SASSA grant recipients must meet these criteria. They show whether you can apply. They do not promise approval.

Income and Affordability Requirements

For most grant recipients, the grant is the only income the lender can see, so it decides how much you can borrow. The National Credit Regulator’s affordability regulations require the lender to subtract minimum living expenses and any existing debt repayments from your income. When the income is a fixed grant, the amount left over is often small. That is why the amount you are offered may be well below the advertised maximum of R5,000.

Run your own check as well. Take your monthly grant, subtract rent, food, transport, electricity, school costs and any funeral policy, and see what is left. If the EasyPay instalment would use up most of that, the loan will leave you short every month until it is repaid. That is usually 3, 6 or 9 months, depending on the product.

Credit and Financial Requirements

Your EasyPay Loan repayments are not a deduction made by SASSA. SASSA allows only one deduction from a grant, capped at 10% of the grant and only with the beneficiary’s consent. That rule is about deductions from the grant itself. With an EasyPay Loan, you sign a debit order in the loan agreement that lets the lender take each instalment from your EasyPay Everywhere account on or after your grant date. So the amount taken is set by your loan quote, not by SASSA’s 10% limit.

These are the main risks of borrowing against a grant:

Documents and Verification Required

A lawful lender checks your documents and your fingerprint. It never needs to keep your card or know your PIN. If anyone asks for them, walk away.

How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness

Many people search for a way to apply for EasyPay loans SASSA online. There is no fully online application form. The remote options still depend on a branch visit you make first:

  1. If your grant is not yet paid into EasyPay Everywhere, change your payment method at a SASSA office using SASSA’s official consent form for bank payment.
  2. Visit an EasyPay Everywhere branch to verify your fingerprint and link your cellphone number.
  3. Apply by dialling *120*3737# and choosing the loans option, or by calling 0801 11 18 80. You can also leave your details on the call-back form on the official EasyPay Loans page.
  4. A loan agent phones you to complete the affordability assessment. Read the quote, including the total repayable, before you accept it. The quote is valid for five business days.

Only use these official channels. SASSA does not arrange loans. Be very suspicious of any SMS, WhatsApp message or agent that offers you a “SASSA loan” and asks for your card, your PIN or a payment to release the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SASSA give EasyPay loans?

No. SASSA pays grants and does not offer loans. The lender is EasyPay Financial Services, a private registered credit provider.

Can I get an EasyPay loan if my grant goes to my SASSA card or another bank?

The grant-based loans are linked to your EasyPay Everywhere account history. If your grant is paid elsewhere, you would first need to switch your payment method through SASSA. EasyPay’s FAQ also lists a branch-only one-month loan for people without an EasyPay account, but that loan needs a payslip.

How many grant payments do I need before I can borrow more than R1,000?

Three or more grant deposits into your EasyPay Everywhere account for the loans of up to R2,000 (6 months) and up to R5,000 (9 months). Approval and the final amount still depend on affordability.

Can I apply for EasyPay loans SASSA online from my phone?

Yes, by USSD or a phone call, but only after your cellphone number has been biometrically verified at an EasyPay Everywhere branch.

Someone took money from my grant that I did not agree to. Who do I contact?

For an EasyPay Loan deduction, contact EasyPay on 0801 11 18 80 or SMS 49201. For any deduction you did not consent to, contact SASSA on its toll-free line 0800 60 10 11 or WhatsApp 082 046 8553.
