Discovery Black Card requirements start with qualifying income of R850,000 to R2.5 million a year. You also need a valid South African ID, three months of income documents and a pass on Discovery’s credit and affordability assessment. The Black credit card account costs R275 a month, per Discovery’s fee guide effective 1 September 2026.
Black sits above Gold and Platinum and below the Purple Suite. Discovery decides each application; meeting the income band does not guarantee approval.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
- Qualifying income of R850,000 to R2.5 million a year
- A valid South African ID number
- Proof of income, normally three months of bank statements
- A passed credit and affordability assessment
- Consent for Discovery to check your credit bureau record
Discovery’s own tiers by qualifying income are Gold (R100,000 to R350,000), Platinum (R350,000 to R850,000), Black (R850,000 to R2.5 million) and Purple (above R2.5 million). Apply for the tier that matches your income; see the Black Credit Account page.
Income and Affordability Requirements
Your income must fall in the Black band. Separately, Discovery measures affordability as your monthly disposable income: net income minus living expenses minus credit commitments. It requires disposable income above R500 and a debt service ratio below 66%.
Credit and Financial Requirements
Discovery assesses willingness to pay, using your risk profile and credit bureau information including your credit score, and ability to pay, which is affordability. You must consent to the bureau check. Discovery does not publish a minimum credit score, so there is no figure to aim for beyond keeping your record clean and your commitments low.
The Black credit card account uses Discovery’s single credit facility, which can be linked to a credit card account, an overdraft on a transaction account, or both.
Documents and Verification Required
- Your South African ID. Discovery checks the number with the Department of Home Affairs.
- Income documents in your own name, matching the income you declare, for the most recent three consecutive months. The last one must be dated less than 30 days before you apply.
- Salaried applicants: your most recent three months of personal bank statements.
- Commission earners: three months of bank statements and payslips.
- Employed for less than three months: add a letter of appointment or work contract.
When you apply for credit, Discovery asks for proof of your sources of income, such as bank statements or salary slips. A client without a valid South African ID number cannot join Discovery Bank at present, according to Discovery’s own adviser guide.
How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness
Download the Discovery Bank app and open your account, or leave your details on the Discovery Bank website for a callback. A preliminary approval gives you a credit limit and a personalised interest rate, subject to verification of your income documents. You must submit and verify those documents within 21 days of the credit offer, otherwise the offer expires and you must reapply. If you are declined, you receive a Declined Credit Letter giving the reasons. After approval you register in the app and finalise account opening; the account and credit facility are opened and your cards are created and delivered.
To improve your readiness, gather three clean months of statements in your own name, check that the income they show matches what you declare, and settle or reduce existing credit commitments so your disposable income and debt service ratio clear Discovery’s limits.
