There is no single fire fighter course that opens the door. Municipal fire and rescue services recruit through adverts, and the requirements are set per post. Some, such as the City of Cape Town, take Grade 12 applicants as learners and train them. Others, such as George Municipality, ask for an accredited Firefighter 1 course and experience up front.
Typical adverts require Grade 12, a minimum age of 18, fitness and medical tests and no criminal record. The examples below come from official adverts, and each has now closed, so use them as a guide and read the current advert of the service you want to join.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
Learner posts. Cape Town’s learner advert asked for Grade 12 and offered a non-permanent contract during training. Permanent appointment followed the prescribed programme, including Firefighter 1 (NFPA 1001), Hazmat Awareness and Operations (NFPA 1072) and First Aid Level 3, presented by the learning institution. The advert gave a basic salary of R199,340 a year.
Posts that want a course first. George’s Junior Firefighter posts asked for Firefighter 1, Hazmat Awareness and First Aid Level 3 before applying, plus a year of operational experience. The advert listed a salary of R183,360 to R238,008 a year (T6).
The national qualification. SAQA registers an Occupational Certificate: Firefighter (NQF Level 4, 149 credits) that prepares a learner to operate as a firefighter. Entry is NQF Level 4 with Mathematical Literacy. SAQA’s record shows its registration end date as 30 December 2025, with a last date for enrolment of 30 December 2026. Private courses. Ask the service you want to join whether a particular course carries weight in its selection, and check the qualification with SAQA before you pay.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
- Grade 12 is the baseline in both adverts, and George accepts Grade 12 or higher.
- Cape Town preferred Mathematics and Physical Science, which are an advantage rather than a stated compulsory requirement.
- No APS is stated. Entry is through the recruitment assessment, not academic points.
- George asks for a Code C1 licence. Cape Town’s learner advert lists no licence.
- The SAQA Occupational Certificate lists Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 as its entry requirement.
Documents and Application Requirements
Cape Town. Applications were online only through the City’s eRecruitment system, with a certified copy of your ID and a recently certified matric certificate. The advert accepted no hard copies or email, and you need an e-Services account. Start from the City’s careers page.
George. The Junior Firefighter posts were submitted by hand at 71 York Street, HR Reception, using the application form from george.gov.za. Check the current advert for how to submit.

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Fitness test. Cape Town’s learner process began with a compulsory fitness test: a 1.9 m reach, a 2.4 km run (men 11 minutes, women 13 minutes), 30 push-ups and 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds each, and two 25 kg drums carried 100 m.
After the fitness test. The process continued with a written assessment, an interview, fingerprints, a City medical evaluation, a drug test and claustrophobia and acrophobia tests.
Volunteer reservists. Cape Town’s reservist firefighters must be South African citizens living in Cape Town, aged 16 to 60, with a clean criminal record, and give at least 160 hours a year. Applications go through the City’s Volunteer Portal.
