CJC here means Central Johannesburg TVET College, a public TVET college with seven campuses. It offers NC(V) and NATED programmes plus occupational programmes. Entry to NC(V) Level 2 needs Grade 9 or an equivalent qualification, and you apply online through the CJC local student application page.

Programmes differ by campus and each has its own entry rules, so apply for a specific programme at a specific campus rather than for the college in general.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

See the Business Management NC(V) page for a worked example of an NC(V) programme.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements

Choose the programme and campus first. CJC has seven campuses: Alexandra, Ellis Park, Langlaagte, Parktown, Riverlea, Smit Street (Braamfontein) and Troyeville. The main campus is at 5 Ubla Avenue, Parktown. Programmes are not offered at every campus, so check the CJC campuses page and the programme page before you apply.

The streams lead to different outcomes. The NC(V) runs from Level 2 to Level 4. The NATED route runs from N1 to N6. To earn the National N Diploma you need more than N6: CJC states that you must pass 12 subjects across N4 to N6 (3 to 5 subjects per level) and submit an employment certificate showing 24 months of work in your field for engineering studies, or 18 months for business studies and utilities.

Public TVET colleges are state institutions and their qualifications are nationally issued. That is a different position from a private college.

Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements

No APS applies to TVET admission; entry depends on your qualification level. Subjects depend on the programme. For the Business Management NC(V), CJC lists these subjects:

Other NC(V) fields have their own subject lists on their programme pages, so check the one you want rather than assuming this list applies.

Documents and Application Requirements

CJC takes applications online. Scan your documents before you start. The CJC local student application page lists:

The application must be completed 100% and all requested documents uploaded before it is submitted to the college. The CJC FAQs also mention a latest school report, Senior Certificate or highest certificate, an ID or affidavit with a photograph, and proof of residential address and contact details. Foreign students need a valid study permit until the end of the study period.

If you are moving from another TVET college, register as a new student and supply your certified results from the previous college.

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations

Applications and deadlines. The CJC FAQs say late applications stay open until the 5th of February, without stating a year, and tell you to check the website for changes. Confirm the current closing date for the programme you want. If your application is unsuccessful, you may apply for a different course using the same student number. CJC sends the status of your application by SMS or email.

Intakes. CJC runs NATED engineering as trimester programmes and business studies and utilities as semester programmes. Ask the college when the next intake opens. For fees, see the courses, campuses and fees page.

Funding. NSFAS funds students on NC(V) and Report 191 (NATED) programmes at public TVET colleges. Per the NSFAS TVET page, you must be a South African citizen with combined household income of no more than R350 000 a year (R600 000 for a person with a disability), and be admitted or hold a firm offer from a college. SASSA grant recipients qualify automatically. Apply to NSFAS separately from the college.

Keep your funding. CJC says an NSFAS-funded NATED student who passes 3 of 4 subjects is still funded, but failing more than one stops funding. For NC(V), passing 5 of 7 subjects keeps funding, and failing more than two stops it. You pay class fees for subjects you fail. CJC also requires at least 80% attendance; below that you cannot sit the exam in the subject and forfeit NSFAS bursary benefits.

NC(V) runs from Level 2 to Level 4, one calendar year per level. NATED runs from N1 to N6 and is delivered as trimesters for engineering and semesters for business studies and utilities.

Does N6 give me the diploma?

Not alone. CJC states that the National N Diploma needs 12 subjects passed from N4 to N6 plus an employment certificate: 24 months in your field for engineering, or 18 months for business studies and utilities.
