Boilermaking is a listed trade, and the qualification that counts is the trade test. Passing it makes you a qualified artisan with a certificate issued under the Skills Development Act 97 of 1998.

- Grade 9 as an absolute minimum for some routes; Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Sciences is the practical standard

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
The workplace is the gate, not the theory. Trade qualification requires supervised practical experience under a qualified artisan. College theory alone does not lead to a trade test, so securing an apprenticeship or learnership is the real task.
Three routes exist. An apprenticeship contracted with an employer combining college theory and workplace training; a learnership registered with the relevant SETA, which pays a stipend; and Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning for people with years of workshop experience and no formal papers, through the relevant SETA and the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB).
Welding certification is where the money is. Boilermaking and welding overlap, and coded welding certifications — qualifying you to weld to a specified procedure and material — are separately assessed and are what allows work on pressure equipment, pipelines and structural steel. Ask any training provider or employer about the certification route, because it materially changes earning capacity.
Pressure equipment is regulated. Work on pressure vessels and steam systems falls under the Pressure Equipment Regulations made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with requirements for competent persons and approved inspection authorities. That is a specialised and well-paid area with its own gates.
Confirm the trade test centre is accredited. The trade test is conducted at an accredited centre and the certificate is issued through the QCTO and NAMB. A trade test at an unaccredited centre produces nothing.

- Mathematics — Mathematical Literacy is generally not accepted for engineering trades
- Physical Sciences, or the equivalent engineering science at N-level
- Engineering Graphics and Design is a strong advantage — the trade is built on reading drawings
- English at a level supporting technical instruction, procedures and safety documentation
- N1 to N3 with the appropriate trade theory, mathematics and engineering science subjects, for the college route
- A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 in an engineering field, as an alternative

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Apply directly to employers. Mines, fabrication shops, power stations, refineries, shipyards and engineering contractors take apprentices, and SETA websites list registered learnerships and the employers offering them.
Never pay to be placed. Legitimate apprenticeships and learnerships are recruited competitively and pay you a stipend. Any demand for payment to secure a placement is fraud.
Take the safety training seriously. Boilermaking involves hot work, confined spaces, working at height and lifting operations, each with its own permit system and its own real risk. Employers require the associated certifications and they are not paperwork.
Understand the health exposure. Welding fume, noise and metal dust carry documented long-term health risks, and occupational health surveillance and correct protective equipment are not optional. Ask an employer what health monitoring it provides — a good answer tells you a lot about the employer.
Public TVET colleges deliver the theory at N-level and are NSFAS-fundable for qualifying students, which is generally the cheapest route to the theory component.
The trade is portable and in demand across mining, energy, petrochemicals, construction and manufacturing. For work abroad the qualification would need recognition in the destination country — confirm with that country’s authority, not with an agent, and never surrender original certificates or your passport to a recruiter.
