TikTok monetization requirements depend on the programme. For the Creator Rewards Program, TikTok’s main view-based programme, you must be at least 18, hold a Personal Account in good standing, and have at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days. You must also be in a country where the programme is open.

The catch for South African creators: TikTok’s published country list for Creator Rewards does not include South Africa. South Africa is covered by a different programme, Effect Creator Rewards, which pays for effects built in Effect House rather than for videos.

Eligibility Requirements at a Glance

TikTok Creator Rewards Program, per TikTok’s Creator Academy:

TikTok’s Creator Academy article lists the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil, and South Africa is not on it. The article is undated and TikTok may add countries, so check the official eligibility page and the Creator Rewards section in your app before planning around it.

Identification and Account Requirements

Personal Accounts only. Business Accounts, accounts associated with organisations, and accounts associated with political or government institutions do not qualify.

Good standing matters. TikTok reviews accounts for unoriginal or low-quality content, advertising in the profile, clickbait, inappropriate or disturbing content and security issues. Five video violations in 30 days make an account ineligible, and five total account violations make it permanently ineligible for the programme.

Effect Creator Rewards works differently. TikTok has expanded it to South Africa. You must be at least 18 and based in a listed region, and eligibility follows the location where your TikTok account was created. TikTok says the list is subject to change. See the Effect Creator Rewards FAQ and TikTok’s South Africa announcement.

Documents and Verification Required

TikTok has not published a South Africa document list for video monetisation, so do not assume you need a particular ID, tax number or proof of address. What TikTok does publish is its US programme terms, which require a valid linked digital payment account with an approved third party in your own name, and completed onboarding documentation including tax reporting documents. Those terms apply to the US programme only, but they show the kind of checks to expect. Read them in the US programme terms and confirm what applies to you in the app.

Fees, Limits and Service Conditions

Under the US terms, rewards are paid on the 15th of each month if the payable amount reaches a $50.00 USD minimum payment threshold, and the creator is solely responsible for taxes on rewards. These terms do not apply to South Africa. TikTok has not published payout methods, minimum payouts or fees for South African creators for the video programme.

For Effect Creator Rewards, TikTok states that a single effect can earn a maximum of $14,000 USD, and a single creator can collect a maximum of $50,000 USD per month.

Money you earn from TikTok is your responsibility to report. Confirm your tax position with SARS or a registered tax practitioner.

How to Apply, Open or Activate

  1. Check your account type. Switch away from a Business Account if you want to be considered for Creator Rewards, and make sure you are 18 or older.
  2. Check your numbers against the 10,000 follower and 100,000 views in 30 days thresholds.
  3. Look for the Creator Rewards or monetisation option in your TikTok app. If it does not appear for your South African account, the programme is likely not open to your country yet.
  4. If you build effects, look at Effect Creator Rewards through Effect House, which includes South Africa.

Only TikTok can grant access. Ignore paid “monetisation unlock” services, and never buy followers or views, because tampering and fraud make an account ineligible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for monetization on TikTok?

For Creator Rewards: 18 or older, a Personal Account in good standing, 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and residence in an eligible country. Other routes, such as Effect Creator Rewards, have their own rules.

What are the TikTok rules for monetization?

Your account must follow the Community Guidelines and post original content. Five video violations in 30 days or five account violations make it ineligible, only Personal Accounts qualify, and tampering or fraud is not allowed.

Can I monetise TikTok videos in South Africa?

Not through the Creator Rewards Program as far as TikTok’s published country list shows, because South Africa is not on it. That list may change, so check your app and TikTok’s eligibility page. Effect Creators in South Africa can earn through Effect Creator Rewards.

What are the TikTok monetization requirements in the USA?

The US programme uses the same follower and view thresholds, and adds a valid linked payment account in your own name, tax onboarding documents and a $50 USD minimum payout. These terms do not apply to South African accounts.

Why can I not see a monetisation feature others have?

TikTok releases features country by country. A feature a creator abroad can see may not be open to a South African account. Check the Creator Rewards or monetisation section of your app.

Confirm current eligibility with TikTok through its Creator Academy. See account and contract requirements and browse all consumer service requirements.
