Education and Subject Requirements
The form asks for an Admission Point Score (APS) of 18 or above, excluding Life Orientation. Specialised musterings, such as aviation engineering, also need Mathematics and Physical Science.
Applicants with a 3-year tertiary qualification are allowed a higher age limit (see below). Ask the recruitment centre which mustering suits your marks before you apply.
Age, Fitness, Licence and Background Requirements
Age: 18 to 22 years with Grade 12. If you have a 3-year tertiary qualification, the limit is 18 to 26 years when you report for duty.
Background: you must have no criminal record or pending cases, and be a South African citizen without dual citizenship.
Medical and appearance: applicants are subject to drug testing, psychometric evaluation and a medical evaluation. You may have no visible tattoos when in uniform, and this is verified through body inspection. The form does not publish fitness test standards, so ask the recruitment centre what the physical assessment involves.
Documents and Evidence Required
Attach your CV and copies of:
- Your ID
- Your matric certificate (for 2025 matriculants, only the statement of results is accepted)
- Any tertiary qualifications
The form also asks for your ID number, cell numbers, residential address, matric year and certificate number, and post-matric qualifications. You must sign a declaration that the information is true and accurate. The form does not ask for a police clearance certificate or proof of residence.
Application and Selection Process
MSD is a two-year contract: initial military training and functional training in the first year, then deployment to units in the second.

- Complete it, sign the declaration and attach your CV and copies.

- Wait to be contacted. The form says that if you have not been contacted by 31 December 2027, you should consider your application unsuccessful.
