VUT’s 2027 list shows only this teaching degree, so ask the university before you assume it offers foundation or intermediate phase teaching. Funding is a separate application: the Department of Basic Education’s Funza Lushaka bursary opened for 2027 on 1 October 2026.

Education and Subject Requirements
The B Ed is the route into teaching at VUT. Your matric must give bachelor’s degree admission, and your levels in the language of teaching, Mathematics (or Maths Literacy) and Physical Science (or Technical Science) must meet the minimums above.
If you plan to apply for the Funza Lushaka bursary, its academic rules are separate from VUT’s. It asks for a bachelor’s pass and at least level 4 (50% and above) in the two subjects you will specialise in teaching, with phase-specific rules. Applicants for intermediate, senior and FET teaching must specialise in two or more priority subject areas.
Funza Lushaka does not fund the one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and will not fund it in 2027. If you already hold a degree and want to teach, ask VUT directly about its postgraduate teaching options and how they are funded.
Age, Fitness, Licence and Background Requirements
VUT’s admission requirements for the B Ed set no age limit. The Funza Lushaka bursary does: first-time applicants must be under 30 years old. If you are older than that, you can still study, but you will need other funding.
Funza Lushaka also checks your background. You should check your own police record before applying. If a criminal matter is less than ten years old, you are not eligible to study teaching or to apply for the bursary, and the National Register for Sexual Offenders is also checked.
VUT’s published B Ed requirements do not list a driver’s licence or fitness test. Confirm any teaching-practice conditions with VUT’s Faculty of Human Sciences.
Documents and Evidence Required
For a VUT application you submit:
- A certified copy of your South African ID (a passport, for international applicants)
- A certified copy of your Grade 11 report or your latest Grade 12 report, for example the June examination results
- Proof of the application fee payment: the fee is R110 for all applicants, and you pay it on the application portal before you can submit
Proof of address is not compulsory. For the Funza Lushaka bursary you also need a student number and acceptance at a university before you apply, as set out in the Funza Lushaka Bursary Application Notes 2027.

Apply online through the VUT how-to-apply page. The B Ed (Senior Phase and FET Teaching) closed on 31 July 2026. The page gives different closing dates for other programmes, so confirm the date for the programme you want rather than relying on the banner alone. If you missed the B Ed deadline, ask VUT whether late applications or waiting lists are possible.
For funding, apply separately to Funza Lushaka. Applications are online only, at the Funza Lushaka website or on the government eServices site. For 2027, applications opened on 1 October 2026. New applications close on 31 January 2027 and re-applications close on 30 November 2026.
The Funza Lushaka bursary covers tuition, accommodation including meals, books and learning materials, teaching practice and, if possible, a small monthly allowance. Read the terms of the bursary agreement, including any service obligation, before you sign. Nobody can sell you a bursary or a place, so never pay anyone who offers to secure one.
