South African citizens need a UK visa before travelling to the United Kingdom, even for a short holiday. The UK Immigration Rules list South Africa as a “visa national” country. That means the UK’s electronic travel authorisation (ETA), which some nationalities use instead of a visa, is not an option on a South African passport.

- you will leave the UK at the end of your visit

A Standard Visitor visa usually lets you stay for up to 6 months. On it, you cannot:
- do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person, unless it is a permitted paid engagement or event

- Employment or study: a letter from your employer setting out your role, salary and length of employment, or a letter from your school or university confirming enrolment and leave of absence
- Self-employment: business registration documents or invoices
- Money: bank statements or building society books that show where the funds came from
- Travel history: previous passports showing earlier international travel
- If someone is sponsoring you: proof that they have enough money for themselves, their dependants and you, evidence of your relationship, and their passport or UK residence document
- Children under 18: a birth or adoption certificate showing the parent relationship, a copy of the photo page of at least one parent’s or guardian’s passport, and a signed consent letter if the child is not travelling with a parent
Do not submit bank statements or letters issued more than a year before your application date. Any document not in English or Welsh needs a full translation. The translator must confirm it is accurate, and include the date, their full name, signature and contact details.
Financial, Health and Entry Conditions
The Home Office does not set a minimum bank balance for a Standard Visitor visa. The caseworker decides whether your money, and any sponsor’s money, realistically covers the trip you describe.
South Africa is on the UK’s list of countries where a tuberculosis (TB) test is needed. It applies if you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more and have been living in South Africa for at least the last 6 months. A standard short visit does not need one. When a test is required, it must be done at a Home Office-approved clinic in South Africa. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray.
