Whether you need a visa for South Africa depends on the passport you hold, why you are travelling and how long you will stay. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) decides this for visitors coming here. For South Africans going abroad, each destination sets its own rules.

If your passport is not on DHA’s visa-exempt schedule, you generally need to apply before you travel, through VFS Global or a South African mission, or through the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) where it is open to your nationality. Official sources do not say explicitly whether any visa can be issued at a port of entry, so do not plan on getting one at the border.

Eligibility and Entry Requirements at a Glance

Four questions decide whether you need a visa and which one:

Overstaying can lead to you being declared undesirable for a period that depends on the length of the overstay or repeat offences. South Africans travelling abroad should see our guide to visa requirements for South African citizens.

Passport and Travel Document Requirements

For a visitor’s visa, your passport must be valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit, according to DHA. Check the blank-page requirement for visitors with VFS or your mission.

Travelling with children: DHA’s tourist advisory says an unabridged birth certificate is required for every child at any South African port of entry, including children of foreigners who do not need a visa. Confirm what else you should carry with DHA before you travel.

Visa and Supporting Document Requirements

For a visitor’s visa, DHA lists:

Other categories add their own documents. See our guide to work visa requirements in South Africa as one example. A police clearance certificate is required for some categories; on DHA’s work visa checklists it must come from each country where you lived for more than 12 months in the last five years and be no older than six months.

Financial, Health and Entry Conditions

DHA lists proof of funds for a visitor’s visa but its page gives no fixed amount. Other visas differ: the relative’s visa, for example, has a stated amount per person per month.

Visa fees: the DHA tariff pages are undated, so ask VFS or your mission for the current fee before you apply.

Yellow fever: travellers arriving from a yellow fever risk country must produce a valid certificate, and without one they may be refused entry or quarantined. The National Department of Health’s travellers protocol sets the details, including the age and country rules, so confirm them there before you leave.

A visa or exemption does not guarantee entry. The immigration officer at the port of entry makes the final decision.

How to Prepare or Apply

  1. Check DHA’s visa-exempt schedule for your passport and note the stay limit that applies.
  2. If you need a visa, apply online by booking an appointment at a VFS Centre, or in person at a South African mission where there is no VFS centre. DHA’s tourist advisory describes this process.
  3. Check whether the ETA is open to your nationality on the ETA portal. The Minister officially launched it on 12 August 2026. The pilot covers travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, and it will progressively become compulsory for short stays from countries that need port-of-entry visas.
  4. Plan your vaccinations if your route includes a yellow fever risk country.
  5. Check each destination’s official immigration website if you are a South African travelling out.

ETA application: you register a profile on the portal, verify your phone and email, scan your passport and upload a selfie. If approved, the ETA arrives within 24 hours, according to the Minister’s launch speech. Visa-exempt travellers may use the ETA voluntarily to extend their stay by up to a further 90 days. Check the portal for the eligible-country list and any ETA fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a visa for South Africa?

You need one unless your passport is on DHA’s visa-exempt schedule or you hold an ETA where it is open to your nationality. Exempt stays are limited, and any study, work or longer stay needs the right visa type.

Who needs a visa for South Africa?

Anyone whose passport is not on the visa-exempt schedule, and anyone whose trip is for a purpose a visit does not cover. Check the current schedule on the DHA website.

Can I get a South Africa entry visa on arrival?

Official sources do not state this explicitly. Plan to apply before you travel through VFS, a South African mission or the ETA, and confirm with DHA if you are unsure.

How long can I stay on a South African visitor’s visa?

The visitor’s visa covers tourism and business visits of 90 days or less. Holders of a tourist visitor’s visa may not apply for a change of visa status while in South Africa.

How do I extend my visa?

Extension applications are submitted in person no less than 60 days before your visa expires, or no later than seven working days before expiry if it was issued for under 30 days. That timing comes from DHA’s work visa checklists. Ask VFS for the visitor’s visa extension documents.

How much is a visa for South Africa?

Confirm the 2026 fees with VFS Global or the South African mission that will receive your application.

How much bank balance is required for a South Africa visa?

DHA lists proof of funds for the visitor’s visa but gives no fixed amount. Ask VFS or your mission what they will accept.

How can I check my visa status by passport number?

We found no official passport-number checking tool. Contact the VFS centre or mission where you applied, or DHA.

What is a visa?

A visa is permission from DHA to enter and stay in South Africa for a stated purpose.

Do South Africans need a visa to travel abroad?

It depends on the destination, which sets its own rules. See our guide for visa requirements for South African citizens.

Where can I find official DHA visa information?

DHA publishes the visa types and the documents each needs on dha.gov.za. Outside South Africa, contact the South African mission that serves your country.
