To meet the Old Mutual loan requirements for a personal loan, you must be a South African citizen aged 18 or older, earn at least R2 500 a month, have been permanently employed by the same employer for at least three months (12 months for terms longer than a year), and choose a term that ends before you turn 60. You apply with your ID, your latest payslip and three months’ bank statements.
Meeting these minimums only gets your application assessed. Old Mutual Finance, the group’s registered credit provider, runs a full credit assessment on every old mutual loan, and the amount you are offered (anything from R2 000 up to R250 000) depends on your affordability and credit profile, not on the advertised maximum.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
These are the published minimum criteria for an Old Mutual personal loan. Fail any one of them and the application will not proceed.
- Citizenship: South African citizen with a South African ID
- Age: at least 18, and the loan term must end before your 60th birthday
- Income: at least R2 500 per month
- Employment for a 1–12 month loan: permanently employed at the same employer for at least 3 months
- Employment for a 13–72 month loan: permanently employed at the same employer for at least 12 months
- Applicant type: individuals only — businesses do not qualify for a personal loan
- Credit life: compulsory for terms of 12 months and longer (Old Mutual’s policy or your own qualifying policy)
The age rule works with the term, not just your date of birth. At 56, for example, the longest term available to you is one that is fully repaid before you turn 60, which caps how long you can spread the instalments — and therefore how much you can afford to borrow.
Income and Affordability Requirements
R2 500 a month is the floor for applying, not a guide to what you will get. Old Mutual says it assesses “affordability and personal credit profile” for every application, and the National Credit Act obliges any registered credit provider to check that the instalment fits what is left of your income after tax, living expenses and existing debt repayments.
Practically, that means three things for your application:
- Your bank statements must show the salary your payslip claims. Old Mutual asks for three months of statements so it can see the income arriving consistently.
- Existing debit orders count against you. Store cards, other loans and vehicle finance all reduce the instalment you can carry.
- Tenure affects the term. If you have been with your employer for less than 12 months, you are limited to a term of 12 months or less, which pushes the instalment up for the same loan amount.
The Old Mutual personal loan calculator gives an estimate of the instalment before you apply. Old Mutual stresses that the result is an estimate, not an offer.
Credit and Financial Requirements
Your credit record is assessed alongside affordability. Old Mutual says it looks at your “previous credit record” and that it may not be able to proceed if you have never had debt, although it will consider your circumstances; first-time borrowers may qualify only for a small loan until they build a repayment track record.
Before applying, check your record. You are entitled to one free credit report a year from each credit bureau under the National Credit Act, and Old Mutual offers a free credit score online and at its branches. Dispute any incorrect listing with the bureau first — it is quicker to fix an error than to explain it during an application.
Two further credit conditions apply to loans of 12 months or longer:
- Credit life cover is required. It must cover at least the outstanding balance on death or permanent disability, and at least 12 months of instalments for temporary disability or retrenchment. You can take the policy Old Mutual arranges through OMART or substitute your own, provided it gives at least the same protection without unreasonable exclusions or waiting periods.
- The employment threshold rises to 12 months with the same employer, as noted above.
Avoid applying at several lenders at once. Old Mutual warns that multiple credit applications in a short period can lower your credit score.
Documents and Verification Required
Old Mutual lists three documents for a personal loan application:
- Your South African ID document
- Your latest payslip
- Three months’ bank statements, not older than seven days
The seven-day rule catches many applicants: statements downloaded two weeks ago will be rejected, so download fresh ones on the day you apply. Use statements for the account your salary is paid into, since the deposits are what Old Mutual matches against your payslip, and your monthly debit order will run on your pay date.
If you want to use your own credit life policy instead of Old Mutual’s, you will be referred to a specialist on 0860 000 886 before the loan can be finalised, so have that policy document ready.
How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness
The old mutual loan application can be started on four official channels:
- Online: the Old Mutual online loan application on the personal loans page (use the “check if I qualify” form, which asks for consent to a credit check)
- WhatsApp: 0860 933 333
- Phone: 0860 000 866
- In person: any Old Mutual branch
A clean application usually follows this order:
- Confirm you meet every minimum above, especially employment tenure for the term you want.
- Check your credit report and resolve errors.
- Download your latest payslip and fresh bank statements (under seven days old).
- Apply on one channel only and complete the credit-check consent.
- Review the loan offer, including the credit life cost, before you accept.
If approved, Old Mutual says it pays out within 24 hours of approval and notifies you by SMS, although payout times can vary. Apply only through Old Mutual’s own website, numbers and branches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Old Mutual offer loans to blacklisted people?
Old Mutual does not advertise loans for blacklisted consumers. Every loan is subject to a full credit assessment of your affordability and previous credit record, so adverse listings or accounts in arrears make approval unlikely. If you are under debt review, the National Credit Act bars you from taking on new credit until the process ends, apart from a consolidation agreement arranged within it.
Can I apply if I have never had credit before?
Yes, but with no credit history Old Mutual may not be able to proceed, or may offer only a small loan until you have a repayment track record.
Can I get an Old Mutual loan on a contract or while self-employed?
The published criteria refer to permanent employment with the same employer (3 months for terms up to 12 months, 12 months for longer terms), although Old Mutual’s online qualification form also lists contracting for 3 months or more as an option. Businesses do not qualify for a personal loan. If you are a contractor or self-employed, confirm with Old Mutual on 0860 000 866 before applying.
How old do I have to be for an Old Mutual loan?
At least 18, and the loan must be fully repaid before you turn 60.
Are the requirements the same for an Old Mutual home loan?
No. An Old Mutual home loan has its own, much higher income and property thresholds and a different document list. Our guide to Old Mutual loans requirements compares the home loan, revolving loan and consolidation loan criteria.
How long does approval take?
Old Mutual says approved personal loans are paid out within 24 hours of approval, with an SMS to confirm, though timing can vary. Delays usually come from outdated bank statements or a payslip that does not match the deposits.
Old Mutual loans are provided by Old Mutual Finance (Pty) Ltd, a registered credit provider (NCRCP35). Criteria, fees and payout times change, so confirm the current requirements on Old Mutual’s personal loan FAQs or on 0860 000 866 before you apply.
