To qualify for a Nedbank personal loan you need a valid South African ID or passport, your latest payslip or other proof of income, and bank statements for the last three months if Nedbank cannot pull them automatically. You also need to pass Nedbank’s credit and affordability assessment, which the National Credit Act requires before any loan is granted. If you are retired and under 65, Nedbank only needs proof of your pension payment.
Nedbank lends from R2,000 up to R400,000, repaid over up to 84 months, at an interest rate set for you personally. Meeting the document requirements does not mean you will be approved. The amount Nedbank offers depends on your income, your expenses and your credit score.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
- Identity: a valid South African ID or passport
- Income you can prove: a payslip or other proof of income. Pensioners under 65 need only proof of their pension payment.
- Bank statements: the last three months, if Nedbank’s automatic retrieval does not work
- A successful credit assessment: the loan agreement only takes effect once Nedbank has done the assessment required by section 81 of the National Credit Act
- Credit life cover: required for the whole term of the loan. You can take Nedbank’s cover or use your own policy.
- A DebiCheck debit order: repayments come off your account each month through a debit order you approve
Nedbank’s product pages do not publish a minimum age or minimum salary. To find out whether you qualify, run the numbers in the repayments calculator on Nedbank’s personal loans page, or start an application. Existing clients may already have loan offers waiting in the Money app.
Income and Affordability Requirements
Nedbank sets your loan amount from the income and expenses you declare, together with your credit score. When you apply online, give exact figures for both. Nedbank says accurate figures are key to getting approved. If you qualify, you can take the full amount offered or a smaller one.
The maximum Nedbank personal loan is R400,000, but that is a product limit and not what most people will be offered. Whether you qualify for a specific amount, such as R110,000, depends on whether the monthly instalment fits your budget after your other costs and debts. Nedbank’s own example of the cost of a loan is R50,000 over 84 months. It lists a monthly instalment of R1,923.47, a R69 monthly service fee and a total of R115,408.20 repaid. Use the calculator to test the amount you actually want.
Self-employed applicants apply through the same process. Instead of a payslip, you supply other proof of income. Ask Nedbank what it accepts for your type of business before you apply. Nedbank’s credit protection plan covers self-employed borrowers for death only, not for disability or loss of income.
Credit and Financial Requirements
Your credit score affects both whether you are approved and the rate you are offered. Nedbank’s published representative example shows a maximum annual interest rate of 29.25% and a maximum annual percentage rate of 34.05%. Your own rate is shown in your quotation and can be fixed or variable.
Credit life cover is a condition of the loan. If you choose Nedbank’s credit protection plan (underwritten by Nedgroup Life), you must be aged 18 to 70. Which benefits you get depends on how you are employed:
- Death: covers the outstanding balance, up to the original loan amount
- Comprehensive disability: pays your instalments if illness or injury stops you earning your usual income. This benefit is for permanently employed borrowers. The policy has no separate critical illness benefit, so check the policy wording to see whether a specific illness would qualify.
- Loss of income, including retrenchment: pays your instalments for up to 12 months. On loans longer than six months, this benefit does not pay out if the loss of income happens in the first three months of the policy.
To claim for retrenchment, you need a retrenchment claim form, proof that your employer followed a legitimate retrenchment process, and a certified copy of your retrenchment letter stating the reasons. You must notify Nedgroup Life in writing within 180 days of the event. Pensioners, self-employed people, people working in the informal sector or for a family-owned business, grant recipients and anyone older than 65 are covered for death only.
Documents and Verification Required
- Your South African ID document or card, or your passport
- Your latest payslip or other proof of income (proof of pension if you are retired and under 65)
- Proof of address
- Bank statements for the last three months, if you do not bank with Nedbank or the automatic retrieval fails
- Proof of your own insurance, if you are not taking Nedbank’s credit life cover
When you apply online, you upload certified copies as PDFs of no more than 10MB each. Existing Nedbank clients are asked to confirm the details the bank already holds. Use your own ID number, and make sure it matches the ID document you upload.
How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness
Looking for a Nedbank personal loan application form PDF? Nedbank’s personal loan pages do not offer a downloadable form. Applications go through three channels:
- Money app or Online Banking: go to Borrow, then Personal loan, and follow the steps. If you are not a Nedbank client, register for a Nedbank ID first. You can save the application and come back to it later.
- Call-back: answer six short questions on Nedbank’s ready-to-apply page. A consultant then calls you and completes the application over the phone, and you email your documents.
- Branch: bring your ID, proof of address, latest payslip and, if you are not a Nedbank client, three months’ bank statements. Staff capture the application on the same online system.
After approval, you review the contract and sign it digitally, confirming each step through Approve-It messages. The money is then paid into the account you named, or straight to a creditor or merchant, depending on what the loan is for. Your agreement is made up of your application, the quotation and the personal loan terms and conditions, so read the quotation before you sign. If Nedbank approves a smaller amount than you applied for, the latest quotation is the one that applies.
- Declare your income and expenses exactly, so the offer matches what you can actually afford.
- Have certified PDFs ready before you start an online application.
- Compare Nedbank’s credit life premium with your own policy, and upload proof if you use your own.
- Check the Nedbank personal loans page and the current pricing guide for the latest fees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take 2 personal loans at Nedbank?
You can apply for a further personal loan, but Nedbank’s terms allow it to use part of the new loan to pay off your existing one. You usually end up with one larger loan, not two separate ones. Nedbank may also offer to consolidate personal loans you have with other lenders into a single loan, if you can afford it.
Is there a minimum income, such as R2,000 a month?
Nedbank does not publish a minimum income. R2,000 is the smallest loan amount in its calculator, not an income threshold. What matters is whether the instalment fits what is left of your income after your expenses and existing debt.
What happens if I miss repayments? (Nedbank personal loan recovery rules)
Nedbank will notify you in writing and suggest options such as a debt counsellor, alternative dispute resolution or a plan to catch up. It can go to court only once you have been in default for at least 20 business days and at least 10 business days have passed since the default notice. You also pay default administration charges and collection costs. A judgment can lead to your salary being attached and will go on your credit record. Nedbank’s debt assistance page lists options if you are struggling.
How do I get my Nedbank personal loan statement or account details?
Your loan account appears under Loans in the Money app and Online Banking. For a statement or anything the app does not show, call Nedbank on 0800 555 111, the number given in its personal loan key facts statement, or ask at a branch.
Can I settle my Nedbank personal loan early?
Yes. There is no penalty for early settlement. In the Money app, select Loans, then Features, then Get settlement quote. The quote is emailed to the address Nedbank has on record.
Can I use my own insurance instead of Nedbank’s?
Yes. You may replace Nedbank’s credit life cover with your own policy. It must cover the loan for its full term, and you must keep the premiums paid.
Nedbank reviews its loan amounts, rates and fees regularly, and fee changes normally take effect on 1 January. Confirm the current criteria and pricing with Nedbank before you apply. For other lenders, see our loan requirements and browse all finance and funding requirements.
