A salary qualification for a premium card is a threshold, not a recommendation. Banks set it to define who may hold the tier, and the question worth asking is different: at what income does the tier actually start returning more than it costs?

That question has an answer, and it depends on how you spend rather than on what you earn.

Eligibility Requirements at a Glance

Typical criteria for a top-tier card.

Income and Affordability Requirements

The National Credit Act 34 of 2005 requires an affordability assessment before credit is granted: the provider must verify gross income, subtract statutory deductions, subtract the prescribed minimum living expenses and subtract existing debt repayments. Lending without that assessment is reckless lending and is prohibited.

Salary qualification and credit limit are separate. The qualifying salary decides whether you may hold the tier; the affordability assessment decides the limit. Meeting the threshold does not produce a particular limit.

Income is not what makes a premium tier pay. Spending pattern does. Someone earning well who travels twice a year and buys nothing on card gets very little from a premium tier. Someone earning less who travels monthly and spends heavily on card may get a great deal more. The threshold measures the wrong thing for your purposes.

Ask how the bank verifies income. Salary is usually verified by payslip and bank statement showing the deposit. For variable, commission or self-employed income, expect several months of statements, financial statements or a tax assessment, and expect the assessment to work off a conservative average.

If you fall below the threshold, ask whether the bank offers a net asset value route or a professional qualification route. Both exist at several banks and both are under-advertised.

If your income drops, the tier does not automatically change but the fees continue. Reviewing and downgrading is your responsibility, not the bank’s.

Credit and Financial Requirements

Work out the break-even. Annual cost of the tier, less the annual cost of the tier below, gives the amount the benefits must return. Then add up: rewards actually earned last year, lounge visits actually made, travel insurance you would otherwise have bought, and any fee waivers you actually qualified for. If the total is smaller, the tier below is the better product at any income.

Rewards programmes usually carry their own fee, separate from the card fee, with earn rates that depend on spending categories and a status level. Add that fee in before counting the rewards.

Interest cancels everything. Rewards return a small percentage; credit card interest costs a large one. Settle the full statement balance monthly by debit order, or the tier is a net loss regardless of income.

Cash withdrawals attract interest from the day of withdrawal, with no interest-free period, plus a fee.

Bundled travel insurance is conditional, typically on paying for the ticket with that card, with trip-length limits and exclusions. Read the wording before relying on it.

Limit increases require your consent under the National Credit Act, and declining the standing offer is the better default.

Review annually. Fees rise every year; spending patterns do not follow them.

How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness

Apply through the app, online or through a banker. Approval, the limit and the rate follow the income or asset qualification, the credit check and the affordability assessment.

Before applying, calculate the break-even using last year’s actual behaviour rather than this year’s intentions. If the arithmetic does not clear, the tier below gives you the same card functionality for less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does meeting the salary threshold set my limit?

No. The threshold decides whether you may hold the tier; the affordability assessment required by law decides the limit.

At what income does a premium tier pay off?

It depends on spending, not income. Calculate the annual cost difference against the tier below and compare it to rewards, lounge visits and insurance you actually used last year.

What if I fall just below the threshold?

Ask whether a net asset value route or a professional qualification route is available. Both exist at several banks and are rarely advertised.

What happens if my income drops?

The tier does not change automatically but the fees continue. Reviewing and downgrading is your responsibility.

Qualifying salary levels, fees, rewards structures and benefit terms are set by the bank and are revised. Confirm current requirements and the latest pricing with Discovery Bank before applying.
