Audit firm bursaries have broadened beyond accounting. Alongside the traditional CA(SA) route, the large firms now fund technology, data analytics, actuarial science, cyber security and management consulting streams, because that is where their advisory businesses have grown.
That matters for a learner with strong Mathematics who is not drawn to auditing. The firms fund routes into consulting and technology that lead to different qualifications and different careers within the same organisations.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
The criteria depend on which stream you are applying for.
- Be a South African citizen with a valid ID
- For the CA(SA) stream: a SAICA-accredited accounting degree, with Mathematics at the required level
- For technology, data and consulting streams: a relevant degree in computer science, data science, information systems, engineering, mathematics or statistics
- For the actuarial stream: an accredited actuarial science degree and very strong Mathematics
- Meet the academic minimums, which are high across all streams
- Be accepted at, or registered with, a recognised South African university
- Apply within the programme’s window
Income and Affordability Requirements
Mathematics is required across every stream. There is no route into these programmes through Mathematical Literacy, whichever discipline you choose.
Confirm which streams are funded this cycle. The technology and consulting streams have grown while some traditional intakes have narrowed, and the list is set by the firm and revised.
The qualifications differ by stream. The accounting stream leads to CA(SA) through SAICA. Actuarial streams lead to the Actuarial Society of South Africa qualification, which is examination-based and takes years alongside work. Technology and consulting streams lead to vendor and professional certifications rather than a single designation. Understand which applies before choosing.
Means testing varies. Confirm whether a household income threshold applies to the specific stream, and prepare proof of household income either way.
Credit and Financial Requirements
Coverage is generally comprehensive: tuition, accommodation, meals, books, a laptop and a stipend, with vacation work at the firm. Confirm current coverage directly.
Where a work-back obligation applies, you agree to work for the funder for a defined period after qualifying, commonly one year for each year funded. Leaving early, or declining the post, usually converts the bursary into a repayable debt. Read that clause before signing.
The nature of the obligation differs by stream. Accounting streams commit you to a training contract; technology and consulting streams commit you to a graduate role. Read which applies to you and what happens if you leave.
The actuarial route deserves a specific warning. It is examination-based, extremely demanding, and takes many years alongside full-time work. Pass rates on actuarial examinations are low by design. It is a well-paid and well-regarded profession, and it is not a route to take casually. Speak to working actuaries before committing.
Continuation is conditional on academic performance, and the standard across these programmes is high.
Bursary applications are always free. No legitimate funder charges an application fee, a “processing” fee or a fee to release funding. Anyone asking for payment to secure funding is defrauding you. Apply only through the funder’s own official channel.
