TUT’s PGCE is the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Training Teaching), an NQF level 7 qualification of 120 credits offered at the Soshanguve North Campus. To be admitted you need an appropriate diploma or degree with enough subject content to develop teaching subjects for the FET phase. Those details come from TUT’s 2026 Humanities prospectus (Part 5), the most recent PGCE entry published.
The programme runs for a minimum of two years, with a January intake only, in block mode on Saturdays. If you are looking for TUT’s undergraduate teaching route (the “diploma in teaching” many people search for), that is the Bachelor of Education, covered below.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- An appropriate diploma or degree with sufficient disciplinary learning to develop teaching subjects in the FET phase
- A teaching specialisation that matches your prior qualification: Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Management, Languages, Physical Education (Sport), or Hospitality and Tourism
- Subject depth: a full major at NQF level 7 in one subject and at least 32 credits at NQF level 6 or higher in the other
- Academic potential, shown by a 60% average for your previous qualification, completed in a satisfactory time
- January intake only; minimum two years, Saturday block classes
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
TUT admits applicants with an appropriate diploma or degree. Selection is made by a departmental panel: applicants with a 60% average for their previous qualification who completed it in a satisfactory time are admitted until enrolment numbers are reached.
This is a postgraduate programme, so your matric results are not the deciding factor. Your earlier qualification and the subjects inside it are.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
The PGCE is for the FET phase only. Each specialisation needs a related diploma or degree. For example, Economics and Management needs a diploma or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Studies or Management.
To specialise in one subject, you must have completed a full major at NQF level 7 in it, and at least 32 credits in the other subject at NQF level 6 or higher. Check your academic record against this before you apply.
There is no APS for the PGCE. If your qualification does not contain the required subjects, the undergraduate route is a Bachelor of Education (BEd). TUT’s 2027 General Information for First Year Enrolment gives the BEd (Intermediate Phase) as needing an NSC with bachelor’s endorsement, English at level 4, another home language at level 4, Mathematics at level 4 or Mathematical Literacy at level 5, and an APS of at least 25 excluding Life Orientation. It takes four years at Soshanguve North and closes on 31 July. TUT also lists diplomas in Adult and Community Education and Training in its Faculty of Humanities, with specialisations such as Civil Technology, Consumer Sciences, Electrical and Mechanical.
Documents and Application Requirements
Apply online at tut.ac.za and have your documents ready before you start. TUT ranks all completed applications received within the published closing dates, so ask the university for the PGCE closing date and the documents required for postgraduate applications.
TUT’s R240 application fee is stated for first-year and undergraduate applicants, so confirm with TUT whether it applies to a PGCE application. You can check your admission status on the TUT website under Study@TUT, then Check Your Status.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
The PGCE has a January intake only, and the programme runs for at least two years because classes are in block mode on Saturdays. Because applicants are admitted until enrolment numbers are reached, apply early.
TUT says programmes can close at any time once full, and that prospectus information is subject to change. The PGCE details above come from the 2026 prospectus; confirm them for your intake year. For the general picture, see our guide to PGCE requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need for a TUT PGCE?
An appropriate diploma or degree with teaching-subject depth for the FET phase: a full NQF level 7 major in one subject and at least 32 credits at NQF level 6 or higher in a second, plus a 60% average for your previous qualification.
Is the TUT PGCE one year?
No. TUT states a minimum duration of two years, in block mode on Saturdays, with a January intake only.
What are the TUT diploma in teaching requirements?
TUT’s first-year teaching route is the BEd rather than a teaching diploma. The Intermediate Phase BEd needs an APS of at least 25 and Mathematics level 4 or Mathematical Literacy level 5. The PGCE is a postgraduate qualification that needs a prior diploma or degree.
Which phases does the TUT PGCE cover?
The FET phase only, with specialisations in Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Management, Languages, Physical Education (Sport), and Hospitality and Tourism.
What if my qualification lacks the subjects?
Your qualification must contain the subject depth described above. If it does not, ask TUT’s School of Education what is possible, or consider the four-year BEd.
