The TUT nursing requirements for the 2027 intake are an NSC with a bachelor’s degree endorsement, level 4 in English, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, and Life Sciences, and an APS of at least 27. The Bachelor of Nursing (BNursing) takes four years at the Pretoria Campus, and applications closed on 15 June 2026.
Mathematical Literacy is not listed for BNursing. These figures come from the TUT 2027 General Information for First Year Enrolment and the TUT 2027 First Year Course Information.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- BNursing (NQF 8, 551 credits), Pretoria Campus, four years
- NSC with a bachelor’s degree endorsement
- English, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, and Life Sciences, each at level 4
- APS of at least 27, excluding Life Orientation
- Closing date 15 June 2026, which has passed for the 2027 intake
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
TUT does not count Life Orientation, or any subject in which you achieved level 1, in your Admission Point Score (APS). TUT’s table puts level 4 at 50% to 59%.
Nationally, a bachelor’s degree needs at least four subjects at performance level 4. TUT’s BNursing requirement is higher, with specific subjects and an APS of 27.
First-time entrants are preferred: no more than 5% of places go to applicants with prior higher-education exposure.
TUT states that the minimum for registration as a learner nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) is an A-level or a Senior Certificate. SANC’s regulations for the four-year professional nurse and midwife programme (R.174) require at least a National Senior Certificate or equivalent. TUT’s Bachelor of Nursing appears on SANC’s February 2026 list of universities accredited for the new nursing programmes, with an intake of 60 students a year.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
The three compulsory subjects are English, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, and Life Sciences, each at level 4. Mathematics or Technical Mathematics is named and Mathematical Literacy is not listed, because TUT’s Faculty of Science requires Mathematics.
Your APS is built from your other subjects, so a weak result in one of them costs you more than you might expect.
If you hold a relevant NQF 6 national diploma, you may apply and receive 50% credit exemption.
Documents and Application Requirements
The 2027 application fee is R240. It is compulsory for all first-time applicants, payable once and non-refundable. You pay it at ABSA with your identity number as the reference.
- Proof of payment of the application fee
- A certified copy of your identity document
- A certified copy of your NSC, or your final Grade 11 results if you are in Grade 12
An alternative or international qualification needs a SAQA or CHE certificate of equivalence. TUT cannot obtain it for you, so start your application while the certificate is being processed.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Applications for 2027 opened on 1 April 2026 and BNursing closed on 15 June 2026. A programme can close earlier once it is full. TUT does not admit applicants who have not been evaluated, and all prospectus information is subject to change. Check TUT’s programme closing dates page for the next cycle.
You may apply on Grade 11 or mid-year Grade 12 results and may receive provisional admission pending your final Grade 12 results.
Applicants with an APS of 27 to 29 write the TUT potential assessment and need at least 50% to be considered. Applicants with an APS of 30 or above are automatically eligible without the test.
To check your status, go to tut.ac.za, choose Study@TUT, then Check Your Status, and enter your ID number. If you need funding, apply separately for NSFAS; see NSFAS requirements.
