TUT publishes its admission requirements programme by programme in its annual brochures, not in one single prospectus. For the 2027 intake there are two documents: the General Information for First Year Enrolment (full entry for every programme) and the First Year Course Information (a 20-page summary table). Both can be downloaded from the Study at TUT page.

General entry is a National Senior Certificate (NQF 4) or equivalent with at least six subjects, including English (home or first additional language) at level 3 or better, plus whatever the programme itself lists. The 2027 documents were printed in January 2026, and TUT says all information is subject to change without notice.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

Check these for your programme in the 2027 brochure.

Which document to open: the Study at TUT page also links the 2026 faculty prospectus parts (Arts and Design, Economics and Finance, Engineering and the Built Environment, Humanities, ICT, Management Sciences and Science). For 2027 admission, work from the 2027 General Information and Course Information documents first. To check your application status, go to tut.ac.za, open Study@TUT, choose Check Your Status, enter your ID number and submit. Your reference number, status and a printable letter are then shown.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements

TUT has seven faculties offering more than 300 programme options. Nationally, the legal minimum for a diploma is an NSC with at least 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the institution and an achievement rating of 3 (40-49%) or better in four recognised 20-credit subjects; for a bachelor’s degree it is a rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in four such subjects. TUT then applies its own, higher, programme-specific requirements.

TUT requires English (home or first additional language) at level 3 as a minimum for general entry, and bachelor’s programmes need at least four subjects at performance level 4 while diplomas need at least four at level 3. Most individual programmes ask for more than this, so read your programme’s own entry.

Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements

Each programme entry lists compulsory subjects with minimum levels, and separately lists recommended subjects. Life Orientation and any subject in which you achieved level 1 are not counted in your APS.

As a faculty-level rule, Mathematics is compulsory for Science, Engineering and the Built Environment, and ICT. Mathematical Literacy is optional for Arts, while Management Sciences, Economics and Finance and Humanities accept either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. Individual programmes can differ, so the programme entry is what counts.

Documents and Application Requirements

For the 2027 intake, TUT asks for the following.

The application fee is compulsory for all first-time applicants, payable once and strictly non-refundable. Use your own email address when you apply; TUT says not to use anyone else’s.

Applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 April 2026.

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations

Closing dates for 2027 were 15 June, 31 July or 30 September 2026 depending on the programme (see TUT’s programme closing dates), so the main 2027 cycle has now closed. TUT warns that a programme may close once it is full, even before its published deadline. Check the closing-dates page for your programme before you plan around a late application.

You may apply on Grade 11 or mid-year Grade 12 results and receive provisional admission pending your final Grade 12 results. Acceptance depends on capacity under TUT’s Student Enrolment Plan, first-time entering students get preference, and a waiting list fills places of those who do not register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the TUT prospectus?

On the Study at TUT page. For 2027 TUT publishes the General Information for First Year Enrolment and the First Year Course Information; the faculty prospectus parts there are the 2026 edition.

What are the TUT admission requirements for 2027?

An NSC (NQF 4) or equivalent with at least six subjects, English at level 3 or better, and the subjects, levels and APS that your programme lists. The national minimum is the starting point; TUT’s programme requirements are higher.

Why should I use the current edition?

TUT states that all information is subject to change without notice, and older figures on other websites may no longer apply.

What is the difference between compulsory and recommended subjects?

Compulsory subjects are entry requirements with minimum levels. Recommended subjects are not required but strengthen an application.

Do all campuses offer all programmes?

No. Each programme entry names the campus or campuses where it runs, and the same programme is not offered at every campus.

How much is the TUT application fee?

R240 for 2027, compulsory for first-time applicants, paid once and non-refundable.
