Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) sets entry requirements by faculty, using a points aggregate from your best five subjects. To qualify for diploma study you need a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a diploma pass, five subjects at level 4 or higher, English at level 4, and the subject combination for your chosen qualification. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.
MUT has three faculties: Applied and Health Sciences, Engineering, and Management Sciences. First-year applications go through the Central Applications Office (CAO). The requirements below come from the MUT admission requirements and MUT apply page.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
Each faculty sets its own admission requirements. The general minimum is the NSC diploma pass with level 4 in five subjects, but your programme adds subject and points requirements on top of that. Some departments also screen applicants or set an entrance test before they make an offer.
MUT’s published faculty and department lists do not include a nursing programme, so check with MUT before you plan around nursing entry requirements. If you want a health-related route, the Applied and Health Sciences faculty offers diplomas such as Biomedical Science and Environmental Health.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Subject requirements differ by faculty. At 50% or higher, MUT lists the following.
- Management Sciences: English, Mathematics and Accounting, with a minimum of 25 points for all programmes
- Engineering: English, Mathematics and Physics
- Applied and Health Sciences: English, Mathematics, and Physical Science, Agricultural Science or Life Sciences
Mathematical Literacy is accepted for some programmes only. On the Applied and Health Sciences page, Agriculture, Environmental Health and Information Technology accept Mathematics at level 3 or Mathematical Literacy at level 4. Biomedical Science asks for English, Mathematics and Life Sciences or Physical Science, all at level 4, plus an entrance test. Check the faculty page for your programme’s exact levels.
Documents and Application Requirements
South African applicants need:
- Your Grade 11 final results and Grade 12 June results
- Your NSC or Statement of Results
- Your ID
Transfer students also need their academic record and a certificate of conduct. Applicants who are not South African citizens need a valid passport, valid medical insurance cover, a police clearance certificate and their foreign school certificate (for example GCE or IGCSE).
Apply online through the CAO. One form and one fee cover several programmes. MUT’s student fees page lists the application fee as R520 per application. It is non-refundable and counts towards your deposit if your registration succeeds. Use your CAO number as the payment reference.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
MUT has around 3,500 first-year places across its three faculties and receives far more applications than that, so selection favours the best-qualified applicants and those who chose MUT as their first or second choice.
The apply page says applications open in January and close on 30 September, with late applications accepted until 30 November (a late fee set by CAO applies). Engineering and Analytical Chemistry second-semester applications close on 31 May. The 30 September date has passed, so apply now through the late window if it is open for your programme, and confirm the dates for your intake with MUT.
