A diploma in law at TUT requires a National Senior Certificate with a diploma pass or better, together with the compulsory subjects and minimum Admission Point Score published for the programme. It prepares graduates for paralegal and legal support roles rather than for practice as an attorney or advocate.
This limitation is the essential point. Only the LLB leads to admission as a legal practitioner, so a diploma in law is a route into legal support work or a stepping stone towards further study.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
Applications are generally assessed on the following.
- A National Senior Certificate with a diploma pass or better
- The minimum APS published for the programme
- English at the level required, since legal work is documentation intensive
- A mathematics subject at the stated minimum level
- The campus at which the programme runs
- The closing date for the programme
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
The diploma is applied in focus, covering the legal principles and procedures used in paralegal, conveyancing support and compliance roles. It articulates into an advanced diploma at many institutions.
TUT excludes Life Orientation from the Admission Point Score calculation entirely, and excludes any subject in which you achieved an achievement level of 1. Applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 April 2026, with closing dates per programme at 15 June, 31 July or 30 September. TUT warns that a programme may close once it is full even if the deadline has not passed.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
English at a good level matters most, since legal support work rests on precise reading and drafting. Mathematical Literacy is commonly accepted for law diplomas.
There is no prescribed subject combination beyond the language requirement and a mathematics subject. History and other essay-based subjects are useful preparation but are not required.
Documents and Application Requirements
Applications normally require the following.
- Proof of payment of the R240 application fee
- A certified copy of your identity document or card
- A certified copy of your National Senior Certificate, or final Grade 11 results if you are in Grade 12
- A SAQA evaluation certificate, if you hold a foreign qualification
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
If your goal is eventually to practise, confirm the articulation route into an LLB before enrolling. Progression from a diploma into an LLB is not automatic and differs between institutions.
Practising as an attorney or advocate requires an LLB followed by practical vocational training and admission by the court, governed by the Legal Practice Council.
