Hospitality requirements depend on the qualification and the institution, but the national floor is the same for everyone. For a diploma you need a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with achievement rating 3 (40-49%) or better in four recognised 20-credit subjects. Take the Diploma in Hospitality Management at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Ritson Campus. According to DUT’s Diploma in Hospitality Management leaflet, it is a three-year full-time qualification: two years at the hotel school and one year of work-integrated learning in a hospitality organisation. The leaflet does not state an intake year, so confirm the current one with DUT.
DUT also has an admission route based on work experience, age and maturity for entry-level diploma and certificate studies, subject to its Senate requirements. If you have worked in the industry but lack the school results, ask the institution whether a similar route exists.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Hospitality entry is set by subject ratings as well as total points. DUT’s leaflet asks for an NSC with diploma entry, English (home language) at rating 4 or higher, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy at rating 3, and three more recognised 20-credit subjects. In the leaflet’s rating table, 50-59% is rating 4 and 40-49% is rating 3.
Other hospitality schools set their own figures. The CPUT prospectus entry for the Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management refers applicants to CPUT’s general admission requirements and notes that some courses require additional information with the application. Documents and Application Requirements
Exact document lists differ by institution, so follow the checklist on the application page of the school you choose. Commonly requested items are:
- Your South African ID, or passport and permit if you are a foreign national
- Your Grade 11 results and, once available, your NSC results
- Proof of payment of the application fee, where one is charged
- Any programme-specific extras, such as the additional information CPUT mentions for some courses

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee entry. At DUT, everyone who meets the minimum entry requirements must attend an interview. The leaflet also states that a Hepatitis A vaccination (primary and booster) is required, and that the learner pays for the uniform and kitchen toolkit.
Work-integrated learning is a compulsory part of the DUT diploma, so ask any school where it places students and with which operations before you enrol.
