Civil engineering requirements in South Africa centre on two subjects: Mathematics and Physical Sciences. For a four-year BEng or BSc (Eng) degree you need a bachelor’s pass with high marks in both. At the University of Pretoria (UP), for example, you need level 6 (70%) in each and an APS of 35. A three-year BEngTech degree or a diploma accepts lower marks. Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for any of the programmes on this page.

The qualification you choose also decides your Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) registration category later, so compare both the entry requirements and where each route leads.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements

There are three levels of civil engineering qualification, and each one leads to a different ECSA professional category:

Some institutions also accept N4 or NQF level 4 qualifications instead of a current NSC. Ask the institution whether your certificate qualifies before you apply.

Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements

The subject minimums matter more than the total score. At UP, an APS of 35 does not get you in if your Mathematics or Physical Sciences mark is below level 6. At UCT, you need the subject percentages as well as the points score in every offer band.

How UCT scores civil engineering applicants

UCT does not use the usual APS. Its FPS is out of 600: your percentages for English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences plus your next three best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. For 2027, civil engineering has three offer bands:

Every band requires Mathematics at 80% or more and Physical Sciences at 70% or more. You must also write the National Benchmark Tests (Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy and Mathematics). The faculty does not use NBT results in its admission decision, but you still have to write them.

Which Mathematics and Science subjects count

Rules differ by institution. UCT does not accept Technical Mathematics in place of Mathematics or Technical Sciences in place of Physical Sciences. UJ accepts Technical Mathematics for both its BEng and BEngTech, and Technical Science for the BEngTech. None of these programmes accepts Mathematical Literacy.

Deadlines for 2027 entry differ a lot. UP’s closing date for engineering was 30 June 2026 and Wits’ was 30 September 2026, so both have passed. UJ accepts applications for its BEng and BEngTech in Civil Engineering from 1 April until 31 October 2026 at 12:00. Check each institution before you plan around one date.

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations

Civil engineering places are limited, and minimums are floors, not targets. UP ranks applicants on final Grade 11 or 12 results and says meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. It gives feedback by mid-August, and you must accept or decline an offer by 30 September. MUT admits diploma applicants on an entrance test, merit and available space.

If you miss the BEng cut-off, you have several options:

Your degree is only the start. To register as a Professional Engineer, you usually register first as a Candidate Engineer with ECSA. You then complete a structured period of practical training and pass ECSA’s experience appraisal and professional review interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the UCT civil engineering requirements?

For 2027, UCT guarantees a place in BSc (Eng) Civil Engineering at an FPS of 500, with Mathematics at least 80% and Physical Sciences at least 70%. Offers are likely at a WPS of 480 and possible at an FPS of 420 for redress categories 1 and 2. You must write the NBTs.

What are the requirements for the Diploma in Surveying at MUT?

MUT’s Diploma in Surveying (NQF level 6, 360 credits) is run by its Department of Civil Engineering and Survey. You need an NSC with English at level 4 or 5, Mathematics 4 and Physical Science 4, and at least 20 points. An NQF level 4 qualification of at least 130 credits also qualifies you. Admission also depends on an entrance test. A 4-year extended version is available.

Can I study civil engineering with Mathematical Literacy?

Not at UCT, UP, UJ or MUT. You need Mathematics, and some institutions also accept Technical Mathematics. If you took Mathematical Literacy, one option is to upgrade to Mathematics before you apply.

How long does it take to become a civil engineer?

The BEng or BSc (Eng) takes four years full time, or five on UP’s extended programme. After that you need ECSA candidacy and a structured training period before you can register as a Professional Engineer.

What is the difference between a BEng and a BEngTech in civil engineering?

A BEng is a four-year NQF level 8 degree that leads to Professional Engineer registration. A BEngTech is a three-year NQF level 7 degree that leads to Professional Engineering Technologist registration. The BEngTech usually needs a lower APS; at UJ it is 28, against 32 for the BEng.

Admission figures are revised each cycle. Confirm them on UCT’s engineering entrance requirements page, UP’s BEng Civil Engineering page, UJ’s BEng in Civil Engineering page or the MUT Department of Civil Engineering and Survey. Check professional registration rules with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
