“Medical assistant” is not a registered profession in South Africa, so there is no single “medical assistant course” with set requirements. What exists are registered support roles, each with its own council, and unregistered administrative roles.
Choose the role first, then check the requirements. Two registrable routes are the auxiliary nurse (South African Nursing Council, SANC) and the pharmacist’s assistant (South African Pharmacy Council, SAPC).
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- Auxiliary nurse: a SAQA-registered Higher Certificate in Nursing (NQF 5, 120 credits) makes the learner eligible for SANC registration as a Registered Auxiliary Nurse
- Pharmacist’s assistant: you must register with the SAPC as a learner (basic or post-basic) at the start of your learning programme
- Emergency care: the HPCSA registers roles such as Basic Ambulance Assistant and Emergency Care Assistant
- Medical receptionist or practice administrator: an administrative role; ask the employer or training provider what it requires
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
For auxiliary nursing, the SANC auxiliary nurse regulations (R.169) require at least a National Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification, and the programme is one academic year of full-time study. The SAQA record for the Western Cape College of Nursing’s Higher Certificate in Nursing lists entry as an NSC or NCV at NQF level 4 that gives access to Higher Certificate studies, or a Senior Certificate without endorsement, with recognition of prior learning accepted. Other providers may differ.
Enrolment into the older enrolled nurse and nursing auxiliary courses ended on 30 June 2015 (SANC Circular 7/2016), and the new Higher Certificate and Diploma are not replacements for them. People already enrolled are not affected. Do not enrol in a programme that still advertises the legacy route.
To register with the HPCSA, a practitioner must have completed a training programme approved and accredited by the relevant Board. Short courses only enhance skills within a category in which you are already registered.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Subject and points requirements are set by the provider, not by a national “medical assistant” rule. The SAQA entry rule for the Higher Certificate in Nursing refers to the level of the school certificate, not to named subjects, so ask the college you apply to whether it requires Life Sciences, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, and what APS it uses.
The South African Pharmacy Council publishes pharmacist’s assistant learner and post-basic information, but its overview pages do not give a basic entry level. Confirm that with the SAPC or the training provider.
Documents and Application Requirements
Providers set their own application lists. For a pharmacist’s assistant registering post-basic with a South African certificate, the SAPC asks for:
- The application form
- A certified copy of your ID or passport
- Proof of your certificate and of completed in-service training
- Proof of any required examination
- The prescribed fee
For nursing and other clinical routes, ask the college and the council which documents they need and what they charge. Never rely on a provider’s brochure alone.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Before paying, ask which council will register you on completion and in which category. If no registration follows, you are buying an administrative or non-registrable qualification. That may suit you, but decide knowingly.
Check the SAQA qualification, the provider’s accreditation and the council’s approval. No legitimate employer charges you a fee to be placed in a job.
