To work as a dental assistant in South Africa you must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Working as, or employing, an unregistered dental assistant is an offence, punishable by a fine or up to 12 months’ imprisonment, or both.
The formal route is the Higher Certificate in Dental Assisting (NQF level 5, 128 credits), for example the one offered by Durban University of Technology (DUT). Other institutions set their own entry criteria, so check the programme you want.

Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
The SAQA record for DUT’s Higher Certificate in Dental Assisting lists the entry rule: a Senior Certificate or National Senior Certificate with endorsement for entry into Higher Certificate studies, or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4. The qualification can also be achieved through recognition of prior learning, assessed under the university’s policy.
The SAQA record covers DUT’s programme only. Other universities, TVET colleges and private providers publish their own requirements, so confirm the programme is accredited and leads to HPCSA registration before you enrol.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
The qualification rules for the DUT programme require compulsory NQF level 5 modules totalling 128 credits, including a 16-credit Dental Assisting Clinical Practice module. The record sets no subject list or APS; any subject requirements or points score come from the institution, so ask the one you are applying to.
The SAQA registration of the DUT qualification runs to 30 June 2027, with a last enrolment date of 30 June 2028.
Documents and Application Requirements
Each institution publishes its own application documents. Expect to provide the following, and confirm the list with the provider:
- Certified copy of your identity document or passport
- Your NSC or Senior Certificate results, and certificates from any previous study
- A study permit, if you are an international applicant
- Proof of the application fee, where one applies

Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Ask the provider before you pay whether its graduates register with the HPCSA, and get the total cost in writing. Nobody legitimate charges you a fee to be placed in a dental practice.
