Business administration requirements depend on the level you apply for. A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) or similar degree needs a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a bachelor’s pass: at least 30% in the institution’s language of learning and teaching and at least 50% in four 20-credit subjects. A higher certificate needs an NSC with at least 30% in that language, and a diploma needs at least 40% in four 20-credit subjects.
Those are the national minimums set for higher education. Each institution can add its own subject, points and language requirements on top, and there is no central application: you apply to the institution itself.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- Bachelor degree of business administration: NSC with a bachelor’s pass, or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification, plus the institution’s own programme requirements
- Diploma: NSC with at least 40% in four recognised 20-credit subjects and 30% in the language of learning and teaching
- Higher certificate in business administration (NQF level 5): NSC with at least 30% in the language of learning and teaching, plus any institutional points minimum
- Mature applicants: national policy requires institutions to allow alternative routes, including recognition of prior learning (RPL) for adults without an NSC. MANCOSA, for example, considers applicants over 23 without a bachelor’s pass through mature age exemption
- Registration: private providers should appear on the DHET register of private higher education institutions, with the qualification registered on the NQF
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
The degree minimum comes from the 2018 amendment to the minimum admission requirements policy (Government Notice 1309, Gazette 42068, effective 1 August 2018; the same text was re-published as Notice 1369 in Gazette 42100). It replaced the old rule that the four 50% subjects had to come from a designated list. Any four 20-credit NSC subjects now count; Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject, so it cannot be one of them.
The diploma and higher certificate rules are in the 2008 admission policy. The notice also confirms that an institution may specify subject requirements for a particular programme, so check the programme page for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy requirements.
Two published examples of a bachelor of business administration show how providers build on the national minimum:
- MANCOSA’s Bachelor of Business Administration (NQF level 7, three years, 360 credits, offered online, SAQA ID 62116) accepts an NSC or NC(V) with appropriate subject combinations and levels, an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification with proven English proficiency, or a higher certificate, advanced certificate or diploma. Applicants over 23 without a bachelor’s pass are considered through mature age exemption or RPL.
- Regenesys’ Bachelor of Business Administration (NQF level 7, three years, contact and online) asks for a matric with a bachelor pass or an NQF level 4 equivalent, or a relevant NQF level 5 qualification from an accredited institution, plus basic computer skills. Its intakes are February, March, July and October.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
No single subject is compulsory nationally for business administration. What matters is what your chosen institution asks for:
- Subjects: institutions may set subject requirements per programme. MANCOSA asks for “appropriate subject combinations and levels” of achievement, so check the programme page for the subjects and marks it names
- Language: at least 30% in the institution’s language of learning and teaching is the national floor; MANCOSA also asks for proven English proficiency from NQF level 4 applicants
- Points score: some institutions score your subjects. For its NQF level 5 Higher Certificate in Business Administration, DUT asks NSC and Senior Certificate applicants for at least 20 points (Life Orientation and extra languages excluded) plus a minimum English rating, and NC(V) Level 4 applicants for at least 50% in English or Communication
Points scales and cut-offs are set by each institution and change between intake years, so take the figure from the current page for your programme rather than a general table.
A business administration qualification only has value if it is properly registered. MANCOSA’s BBA is registered on SAQA (ID 62116) from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027, and both MANCOSA’s and Regenesys’ BBAs appear on the DHET register of private higher education institutions (update of 12 August 2026). Check any private provider and the specific programme on that register before you pay a registration fee.
Documents and Application Requirements
You apply directly to each institution. Each one lists its own required documents and any application fee on its programme or application page, and Regenesys notes that some programmes may require an application fee. As a general guide, have these ready:
- your South African ID, or your passport if you are an international applicant
- your NSC or NC(V) results, or the certificate and academic record of any higher certificate, advanced certificate or diploma you want recognised
- for mature age or RPL applications, whatever evidence of work experience and training the institution specifies
- proof of payment of the application fee, where the institution charges one
Foreign school-leaving certificates may need an exemption from Universities South Africa before you can apply for a bachelor’s degree; ask the institution.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Meeting the minimum makes you eligible; it does not guarantee a place. Intake dates and closing dates differ by provider and year, so take the date for your intake from the institution’s own site and apply before it rather than on it.
If you do not yet qualify for the degree, a higher certificate in business administration at NQF level 5 is a stepping stone. MANCOSA lists a higher certificate among the qualifications it accepts for its BBA, and Regenesys accepts a relevant NQF level 5 qualification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements for business administration?
It depends on the level. A bachelor’s degree needs an NSC with 30% in the language of learning and teaching and 50% in four 20-credit subjects, a diploma needs 40% in four such subjects, and a higher certificate needs 30% in the language of learning and teaching. The institution then adds its own rules.
What are the requirements for a bachelor of business administration in South Africa?
An NSC with a bachelor’s pass or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification, plus the institution’s own subject and points rules. MANCOSA also lists a higher certificate, advanced certificate or diploma, and Regenesys lists a relevant NQF level 5 qualification. Applicants over 23 may be considered through mature age exemption or RPL at MANCOSA.
Do I need Mathematics for business administration?
Institutions may specify subject requirements for a programme, so it depends on the provider. Read the subject requirements on the programme page you are applying for.
Can I study business administration without a bachelor’s pass?
Yes, at diploma or higher certificate level, which have lower national minimums. For a degree, MANCOSA considers applicants over 23 without a bachelor’s pass through mature age exemption or RPL, and other providers accept a completed higher certificate or diploma.
Is a business administration certificate worth doing?
A registered higher certificate at NQF level 5 is a recognised qualification and, at some providers, a route into the BBA. Confirm that the programme is registered before enrolling.
How do I check that a business school is legitimate?
Look the institution and programme up on the DHET register of private higher education institutions, and check the qualification ID on the SAQA register.
Entry requirements, points scores and intake dates change each admissions cycle. Confirm them with the institution you are applying to, and check private providers against the DHET register. See admission requirements and browse all education requirements.
