Biomedical science covers the laboratory disciplines behind clinical medicine: haematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology and histopathology. In South Africa there are two distinct destinations within it, and they have different requirements and different regulators.

The training component is a genuine bottleneck. Accredited laboratory training posts are limited, and securing one is a separate competition from getting into the degree. Ask the institution how its students secure training placements before you enrol.

For the research route, the path runs from a BSc through honours and a master’s or doctorate, with selection at each stage based on results.

Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements

Most South African universities calculate an Admission Point Score (APS) from your best six 20-credit NSC subjects on a seven-point scale, giving a maximum of 42. Life Orientation is excluded at most institutions, and level 1 subjects generally do not count. Each university publishes its own APS table and programme minimums, revised annually, so confirm the figure for your intake year with the institution itself.

Individual subject levels matter more than the total for science programmes. Physical Sciences and Life Sciences generally carry specific minimums, and meeting the APS while falling short on one of those will not succeed.

Where the work is. The National Health Laboratory Service is the largest employer of laboratory scientists in South Africa, alongside private pathology groups. Research posts sit in universities, the Medical Research Council, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
