You must renew a motor vehicle licence disc every year before it expires. You can renew online at online.natis.gov.za, or in person at a registering authority or selected post office, and a 21-day grace period applies from the expiry date on the current disc.

The fee depends on the province, the vehicle category and its tare (mass), so there is no single national amount. This page covers what you need, what can block a renewal, and what late renewal costs. The official guide is the gov.za renew motor vehicle licence page.

Driver or Vehicle Requirements at a Glance

Licence and Eligibility Requirements

The disc licenses the vehicle; your driving licence licenses you. They are separate documents with separate renewals, so make sure you bring the right paperwork.

There is a 21-day grace period. It runs from the expiry date on the current disc. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirms you can renew within those 21 days without additional cost; after that, arrears and penalties are charged. Ask your licensing authority for the exact amount on your vehicle.

Not receiving a notice does not excuse a late renewal. The duty to renew every year before expiry stands whether or not a notice arrives. In the Western Cape, for example, MVL2 notices are no longer posted; they are sent by SMS or email, or can be downloaded from the RTMC website. Keep your contact details up to date on the online system so you get reminders.

Driving an unlicensed vehicle can be fined. The RTMC has warned of fines of up to R1000 for an unlicensed vehicle on a public road (2020 statement), so confirm the current position with your licensing authority.

Vehicle, Inspection and Safety Requirements

A roadworthy test is not part of every renewal. gov.za says you must obtain a roadworthiness certificate where the vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load motor vehicle. For an ordinary private car, check with your licensing authority whether anything applies to yours.

Flags on the system can stop the disc. The online system can flag an existing enforcement order, an administration mark, other unlicensed vehicles, roadworthy requirements or a police clearance requirement. When that happens, you may receive a licence receipt without a disc. Clear the flag with the relevant authority before you try again. See the RTMC statement on the online licence disc service.

Documents, PrDP or Supporting Evidence

There is no PrDP requirement for a standard disc renewal. What to bring depends on who owns the vehicle.

Private owner, in person at a registering authority or post office:

Company vehicle: the business certificate of the organisation or company, the ID of the proxy, a letter of proxy, and the MVL2 (or form ALV).

Renewing for someone else: the Western Cape Government lists a letter giving permission, a certified copy of the owner’s ID and your own ID, together with the fees and any penalties or arrears. See the Western Cape vehicle licence page.

Registration or Application Process

Online. Log in to the NaTIS platform at online.natis.gov.za, select “View Motor Renewals”, choose the disc or car, and pay by card. The disc is couriered to you. gov.za describes processing as same day, and the RTMC has said discs are delivered within three to five days.

In person. Go to a registering authority or selected post office with the documents above.

Licence disc renewal form download. Online renewal needs no form. If you have no renewal notice, complete form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle), which you can download from the NaTIS road traffic forms page.

If the vehicle is permanently off the road, ask your licensing authority what notification or deregistration it requires, rather than letting fees build up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is licence disc renewal?

It is set per province and depends on the vehicle category and tare, and gov.za gives no national amount. As an example, from 1 July 2026 the Western Cape fee for a private car is R420 for a tare of 751–1 000 kg, R492 for 1 001–1 250 kg, R690 for 1 251–1 500 kg, R762 for 1 501–1 750 kg, R870 for 1 751–2 000 kg and R1 188 for 2 001–2 250 kg (R246 for a motorcycle). Other provinces publish their own tariffs, and penalties, arrears and any transaction or courier fees are extra. See the Western Cape 2026 fee gazette.

What was the licence disc renewal cost in 2021?

Figures from 2021 are out of date. Use the current tariff for your province, such as the Western Cape gazette above, or ask your local licensing office.

What happens if my disc expires?

You have 21 days from the expiry date on the disc to renew without additional cost. After that you are liable for late licensing penalties and arrears, and an unlicensed vehicle on a public road risks a fine.

I never received a renewal notice. Am I excused?

No. You must still renew every year before the disc expires. If you have no notice, complete form ALV or renew online.

Do I need a roadworthy test to renew?

Only where the vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load motor vehicle, according to gov.za. Confirm with your licensing authority for any other case.

Can someone else renew my disc?

Yes. They need a letter of permission, a certified copy of your ID and their own ID, plus the fees and any penalties or arrears.

Confirm the fee and any penalties with your provincial or municipal registering authority, or through the RTMC online service. See rideshare driver requirements and browse all driving and transport requirements.
