To drive for Takealot you apply through its online Driver Onboarding form. It asks for your ID or passport, a driver’s licence, your vehicle’s licence disc and proof of address. You need an Android phone (version 7 or newer), no criminal conviction and consent to a criminal record check.

Takealot’s own guidelines describe its delivery drivers as independent contractors working with a hub manager, not as salaried staff. Those guidelines are dated 2021, so check the onboarding page for anything newer.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

The onboarding application checks the following before it lets you continue.

Once you are working, Takealot’s driver guidelines expect a valid driver’s licence at all times and a registered, licensed and insured vehicle.

Education and Subject Requirements

The onboarding form does not ask for a school or tertiary qualification. What the guidelines do expect is a good command of English, so you can communicate clearly with colleagues and customers, and the ability to work under pressure while staying professional.

Age, Fitness, Licence and Background Requirements

Licence. You must be able to show a valid driver’s licence at all times. Takealot’s pages do not state a minimum age or a minimum period of holding the licence, so do not assume one; ask Takealot if it matters to you.

Professional driving permit (PrDP). Takealot’s onboarding does not list a PrDP. The government says a PrDP applies to goods vehicles over 3 500 kg gross vehicle mass or vehicles that need an operating licence, and you must be 18 or older to hold one for goods. See the gov.za PrDP page if your vehicle may fall in that group.

Background. You must declare that you have no criminal conviction and agree to a criminal record check. Takealot runs the check; the form does not ask you to bring a police clearance certificate. Under the guidelines, conduct such as being under the influence while on duty can end your agreement.

Documents and Evidence Required

Application and Selection Process

Apply on the Takealot Driver Onboarding page. You answer the eligibility questions, upload the document photos, consent to the criminal record check and accept the terms. Takealot does not publish how long selection takes or what the next stage is, so follow its instructions after you submit.

Once you are on the road, every parcel must be scanned with the driver app, and if a customer is unavailable you wait 15 minutes at the address. Takealot’s pages do not set out pay or fees for the current programme; read the agreement carefully before you sign.
