The identity record comes first. A passport is issued off the national population register, so an ID that has never been issued, a name not yet changed after marriage, or an incorrect record must be fixed before the passport application — not at the same appointment.
Applications are made in person. Biometrics are captured at the office, so there is no fully remote application, and no one can apply on your behalf except in the narrow circumstances the Department allows.
Children need more. An application for a minor generally requires the unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, the consent and presence of both parents or guardians, and their identity documents. Where one parent is absent, deceased or sole guardian, additional documentation is required — a death certificate, a court order or an affidavit in the prescribed form.
A lost or stolen passport requires an affidavit reporting it, and repeat losses attract additional scrutiny and, in some cases, a higher fee. Report a lost passport immediately, because a South African passport is a valuable document on the fraud market.
Passports have physical requirements beyond validity — blank pages for visas and entry stamps, and no damage. A water-damaged or torn passport can be refused at a border even while unexpired.

Financial, Health and Entry Conditions
Processing times vary by office and by season, and are longer at peak travel periods. Apply months before you intend to travel, not weeks. No paid service can accelerate a passport application, whatever is claimed.
Destination countries impose their own validity rules. Many require a passport valid for a prescribed period beyond the intended departure date, and some require it to have been issued within a prescribed period. A passport that is technically valid can still be refused at check-in.
Blank pages matter. Some countries require a minimum number of blank pages for entry, and running low is a common reason travellers are turned away.

Never pay a facilitator or a person inside an office. Fees are prescribed and payable to the Department or the participating channel. Anyone offering to expedite an application or obtain a passport without the requirements is committing fraud, and a fraudulently obtained passport is void.
Never hand your passport or ID to an agent, an employer, a recruiter or a lender to hold. It is your document; retaining someone’s passport to control them is unlawful.
Report a lost or stolen passport immediately to the police and to the Department, and to the nearest South African mission if you are abroad.
