The requirements to renew a drivers licence in South Africa are the same for everyone at the core: your ID or valid South African passport, your driving licence card, proof of residential address, ID photographs, a completed form DL1, an eye test and fingerprints at a driving licence testing centre (DLTC), and the prescribed fee. There is no driving test.
What changes the requirements is your situation. A card that has already expired, one that was lost or stolen, a new surname or address, a failed eye test, a foreign licence, or being overseas when the card runs out each adds something to the list or sends you down a different route. This page covers those cases. If yours is a routine renewal before the expiry date, our step-by-step guide to requirements for drivers licence renewal walks through booking, forms and collection.
Driver or Vehicle Requirements at a Glance
- Card still valid: the standard renewal. Apply at least four weeks before the expiry date, because the new card takes four to six weeks.
- Card already expired: the standard renewal plus a temporary driving licence (extra fee, extra photographs) so you can drive while the new card is made.
- Card lost, stolen or damaged: the same process as a renewal, using form DL1. You get a temporary licence on the day.
- Name or address changed: the renewal plus form NCP. A new surname must be on your ID at Home Affairs first.
- Eyesight has changed: a condition (such as corrective lenses) is added to the licence. If you fail the eye test outright, the card is not renewed.
- Foreign licence: not a renewal but an exchange, allowed for permanent residents within one year of getting permanent residence, and for diplomatic permit holders.
- Living abroad: you cannot renew the card from outside South Africa. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) can issue a confirmation letter in the meantime.
Licence and Eligibility Requirements
Your licence and your card are not the same thing. The RTMC explains that the card is proof that you hold a South African driving licence, and that when the card expires your licence has not expired. That is why renewal is open to anyone who already holds a licence, however long ago the card lapsed, and why you keep your licence codes without retesting.
An expired card still stops you driving. The card is valid for five years from issue. The Western Cape Government says there is currently no penalty for renewing late, but once the date on the card has passed you need a temporary driving licence to drive legally until the new card is ready. The RTMC’s FAQ adds that if you submit your renewal within two months of the expiry date, the expiry date is extended by three months. Keep proof of your application with you and confirm with your DLTC how it applies to you.
You must meet the vision standard on the day. The eye test is the one requirement you can fail. If your sight has worsened, the licence is endorsed with a condition such as wearing glasses or contact lenses, and you must wear them whenever you drive. If you do not meet the standard even with correction, the card cannot be renewed. See an optometrist first if you have any doubt, and bring the report or your lenses.
Old licences in the green ID book were meant to be converted to the credit-card format by 30 April 2003. If yours never was, you are not renewing a card at all, so ask your DLTC what it requires before you book a renewal slot.
A foreign licence cannot be renewed in South Africa. It can only be exchanged for a South African licence if you have permanent residence (within one year of receiving it) or a diplomatic permit, and the foreign licence is valid and carries your photograph and signature. Gov.za states that once the one-year window passes, the foreign licence is no longer valid for driving in South Africa.
Vehicle, Inspection and Safety Requirements
Renewing your driving licence card involves no vehicle, roadworthy test or driving test. The only safety check is your eyesight, done at the DLTC or by an optometrist whose report you hand in, together with fingerprints and a new photograph to confirm your identity.
People often confuse this with renewing the car’s licence. Your vehicle licence disc is a separate yearly renewal: you need your ID, proof of address and the renewal notice (MVL2) or form ALV, at a registering authority or online at online.natis.gov.za. There is a 21-day grace period for the disc and none for driving on an expired licence card, so track both dates separately.
If you drive professionally, your professional driving permit (PrDP) is renewed on its own form and timetable, with a medical certificate. Renewing the licence card does not renew the permit.
Documents, PrDP or Supporting Evidence
Start with the core documents every renewal needs:
- Your ID and a copy, or a valid South African passport and a copy
- Your current driving licence card, if you still have it
- Proof of residential address, such as a utility account (with the account holder’s affidavit if it is not in your name, or a date-stamped ward councillor’s letter in an informal settlement)
- ID photographs, if your DLTC does not capture them digitally (ask how many first)
- Form DL1, and the prescribed fee
Then add what your situation calls for:
- Expired card: the temporary licence fee and extra photographs. The Western Cape asks for two more.
- Lost or stolen card: no card to hand in. Some municipalities ask for a declaration. The City of Cape Town, for example, lists a Declaration of Lost Documents form. Ask your DLTC whether it also wants a police case number.
- New name or address: form NCP (notification of change of address or particulars), and an ID that already shows your new surname.
- Vision changes: your glasses or contact lenses, or an optometrist’s report.
- Foreign licence exchange: an acceptable ID (such as a foreign passport with your permanent residence permit), the foreign licence, proof of permanent residence, proof you were not a permanent resident of South Africa when the foreign licence was issued, a translation if it is not in an official South African language, confirmation from the issuing authority that it is valid and not suspended or cancelled, any international driving permit you hold, forms DL1 and NCP, photographs and proof of address.
Registration or Application Process
How to renew a drivers licence in South Africa when your case is not routine:
- Fix the records first. If you married, divorced or changed your name, update your ID at Home Affairs before you go to the DLTC. The licence follows your identity record.
- Book the slot. Use the official eNaTIS site, online.natis.gov.za, which gov.za directs all applicants to. You choose the province and testing centre, so you can apply where you now live rather than where the old card was issued. Forms DL1 and NCP are free at any DLTC and on eNaTIS.
- Attend in person. The centre checks your documents, takes your fingerprints and photograph, and tests your eyes. Ask for a temporary licence at the same visit if the card has expired, was lost, or will expire before the new one arrives.
- Collect the card from the centre where you applied, usually within four to six weeks. Do not leave it too long: the City of Cape Town, for example, destroys cards not collected within 120 days.
If you are abroad when the card expires, gov.za confirms that the credit-card licence cannot be applied for from outside South Africa, because the eye test and fingerprints must be done at a DLTC. Renew when you are next in the country. Meanwhile, the RTMC can issue a confirmation letter if your licence is valid (call +27 12 999 5200). The RTMC notes that this letter is not a driving licence when shown to a traffic officer. If you plan to drive overseas on an international driving permit, get it before you leave: the Automobile Association (AA) issues these in South Africa, only to holders of a valid South African driving licence.
Only use eNaTIS and your DLTC. Anyone who offers to renew your licence without you attending is offering a fraudulent licence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is needed to renew a drivers licence?
Your ID or South African passport, your driving licence card, proof of residential address, photographs if your centre asks for them, form DL1 and the fee. At the DLTC you pass an eye test and have your fingerprints taken. Add a temporary licence if the card has expired, and form NCP if your name or address has changed.
How do I renew an expired drivers licence in South Africa?
The same way as an unexpired one, with no driving test, however long ago it expired. Book on eNaTIS, attend the DLTC, and apply for a temporary driving licence at the same visit so you can drive until the new card arrives.
My card was lost and was due for renewal anyway. Which do I apply for?
The RTMC says the process for a lost or stolen card is the same as renewing an expired one, so a single application on form DL1 covers it. Take your ID and proof of address, and ask your DLTC whether it wants a lost-documents declaration or a police case number.
Can I renew my licence in a different province?
Yes. The eNaTIS booking lets you choose the province and testing centre. Bring proof of your current address and confirm the fee with that centre, because fees differ between provinces.
What do I need to renew my car licence?
That is the vehicle licence disc, not your driving licence. You need your ID, proof of address and the MVL2 renewal notice or form ALV. Renew it at a registering authority or on eNaTIS every year, within the 21-day grace period.
Renewal, replacement and exchange requirements are set by the Department of Transport, the RTMC and provincial licensing authorities, and fees vary by province. Before you go, confirm with your driving licence testing centre or on gov.za’s renew driving licence, replace lost driving licence and convert foreign driving licence pages.
