Creditum is marketed as a South African online loan service. With any smaller or online-only lender, the useful first question is not “what do I need to apply” but “is this provider registered with the National Credit Regulator” — because an unregistered lender leaves you without the protections the National Credit Act provides.
This page covers the requirements that apply to registered online personal lending in South Africa, and what to check before you upload your ID and bank statements to a site you have not used before.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
Registered online lenders apply broadly the same entry criteria.
- Be 18 years or older
- Hold a valid South African ID document or smart card
- Have a regular, verifiable income paid into a bank account in your own name
- Hold a bank account able to carry an authenticated debit order
- Not be under debt review, sequestration or administration
- Have a cellphone number and email address that can receive verification codes
Income and Affordability Requirements
Online applications feel quick, but the affordability assessment behind them is the same one the law requires of a branch-based lender.
The Act requires an affordability assessment before credit is granted: the provider must verify gross income, subtract statutory deductions such as PAYE and UIF, subtract the minimum living expenses prescribed in the affordability assessment regulations, and subtract existing monthly debt repayments. Lending without that assessment is reckless lending and is prohibited.
Many online lenders verify income by asking you to link your bank account or upload statements directly. Read carefully what access you are granting: read-only statement retrieval for verification is normal; anything that requests your banking password or transaction authorisation is not.
Where income varies, the assessment usually works from an average across the statements retrieved.
Credit and Financial Requirements
A credit bureau check forms part of every application and drives both the decision and the rate.
The agreement is regulated by the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 and the provider must be registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR). Verify registration free of charge at ncr.org.za before you sign.
Before uploading anything, confirm the site is what it claims to be. Check the registration number on the NCR register, confirm the entity name matches the trading name, and look for a physical address and a landline. Type the web address yourself rather than following a link from an SMS or social media advert — cloned lender sites exist and are built to harvest documents.
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, a provider must tell you what it collects and why. If a site cannot explain what it does with your ID and bank statements, do not give them to it.
Documents and Verification Required
Expect to supply the standard pack, usually as uploads.
- South African ID document or smart card
- Latest payslip, or the latest three where income varies
- Latest three months’ bank statements
- Proof of residence not older than three months
- Banking details for payout and the DebiCheck mandate
How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness
Work through these before submitting personal documents to an unfamiliar online lender.
- Verify the NCR registration number at ncr.org.za and match it to the entity name
- Check that the site uses a secure connection and that the address is spelled exactly right
- Read the pre-agreement quotation and the total cost of credit before accepting
- Approve the DebiCheck mandate through your own banking app, never through a link you were sent
- Never share your banking password, card PIN or one-time PIN — no lender needs them
- Refuse any request for payment before the loan is advanced, and report it to the NCR
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to upload my ID and bank statements online?
Only to a provider you have independently verified on the NCR register, over a site address you typed yourself. Documents like these are exactly what identity fraudsters want.
How fast is an online loan?
Decisions can be quick when income is verified electronically, but payout still depends on the DebiCheck mandate being approved through your own bank.
What is DebiCheck?
The national system for authenticated debit orders. You confirm the mandate through your own bank so nothing can be collected from your account without your approval.
Can I cancel after signing?
The National Credit Act gives you rights to settle a credit agreement early. Ask for a settlement quotation as soon as you decide, since interest and fees accrue from disbursement.
Loan amounts, terms and fees differ by provider and change. Confirm the current criteria with the lender, and verify its NCR registration independently before uploading personal or banking documents.
