Barko Financial Services is a registered South African credit provider that lends mainly to salaried employees, with a large branch network in smaller towns and a focus on short and medium-term personal loans repaid by debit order or payroll arrangement.
Because the model depends on a predictable salary, the requirements centre on stable employment and verifiable income rather than on assets or a deposit.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
The core entry criteria are the standard ones for regulated unsecured lending.
- Be 18 years or older
- Hold a valid South African ID document or smart card
- Be permanently employed with a regular, verifiable salary
- Have that salary paid into a bank account in your own name
- Not be under debt review, sequestration or administration
- Have a contactable employer and a working cellphone number
Income and Affordability Requirements
Barko assesses affordability from your payslip and bank statements together.
The Act obliges a credit provider to complete an affordability assessment before granting credit. It must verify your gross income, subtract statutory deductions such as PAYE and UIF, subtract the minimum living expense figure set out in the affordability assessment regulations, and subtract your existing monthly debt repayments. Granting credit without doing this is reckless lending and is prohibited.
Because these are short to medium-term loans, the instalment relative to your monthly income is high. That makes the affordability calculation the binding constraint on how much you can borrow — more often than the credit record itself.
If your salary already carries garnishee orders, emoluments attachment orders or other payroll deductions, those reduce the net figure the assessment works from.
Credit and Financial Requirements
A credit bureau check is part of every application. Barko lends across a wider range of credit profiles than the large banks, but the affordability rules apply identically — a provider may not grant credit that fails the assessment, regardless of how good the credit record is.
All of this is regulated by the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, and the provider must be registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR). Registration can be checked free of charge on the NCR register at ncr.org.za.
Repayment is normally collected by authenticated debit order under the DebiCheck system, which means you approve the mandate through your own bank before the first collection. If you do not approve the mandate, the loan cannot be collected and the agreement will not proceed.
Documents and Verification Required
Take originals to the branch; copies are made there.
- South African ID document or smart card
- Latest payslip, or the latest three where income varies
- Latest three months’ bank statements showing salary deposits
- Proof of residence not older than three months
- Employer contact details for verification
How to Apply and Improve Approval Readiness
Barko applications are usually made in branch, where documents are verified and the DebiCheck mandate is set up on the spot. Find your nearest branch through barko.co.za or the branch listing.
- Bring every document on the first visit — a missing bank statement is the most common cause of delay
- Approve the DebiCheck mandate promptly when your bank prompts you
- Ask for the total repayable amount, not just the instalment, before signing
- Borrow the shortest term you can afford — short-term credit is expensive per month
- Check the provider’s NCR registration on ncr.org.za
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply if I am self-employed?
The product is built around salaried employees. Self-employed applicants should confirm directly with a branch whether business income is accepted and what proof is required.
What is DebiCheck and why must I approve it?
DebiCheck is the national system for authenticated debit orders. You confirm the mandate through your own bank or banking app so that no one can collect from your account without your approval. Without it the loan cannot be disbursed.
Will I be approved with a poor credit record?
Possibly, but the affordability test cannot be waived. A record with recent defaults or judgments narrows the amount and term available.
Can I settle early?
Yes. Request a settlement quotation. Settling early reduces the interest you pay over the remaining term.
Loan amounts, terms and rates differ by product and change over time. Confirm the current criteria with a Barko branch, and read the pre-agreement quotation before you sign.
