To collect a Capitec cash send you need the reference number and the secret code the sender set, plus an appropriate identification document. Capitec’s Send Cash terms and conditions say it pays the cash to any person who presents all three. Capitec’s help centre adds that an SA ID document is needed at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME and PEP CELL stores, while Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, Shoprite and Capitec ATMs ask only for the reference number and the 4-digit secret code.
You do not need to be a Capitec client to collect. Only the sender must be a Capitec banking client. Capitec’s published limits, fees and collection points can change, so confirm them on the Send Cash page before you send or collect. Collecting is free, and the cash must be collected within 30 days or it is paid back to the sender’s account.
Eligibility Requirements at a Glance
- The sender must be a Capitec banking client; the person collecting does not have to be.
- The collector presents the reference number and the secret code, plus an SA ID document at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME and PEP CELL stores.
- The collector collects within 30 days at a Capitec ATM or at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME, PEP CELL, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave or Shoprite. One Capitec answer also lists Game.
Capitec’s Send Cash page is the place to see the current list of collection points.
Identification and Account Requirements
The terms and conditions require an identification document, and Capitec’s help centre says clients must carry their SA ID document, the reference number and the 4-digit secret code to collect at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME and PEP CELL stores. At Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, Shoprite or a Capitec ATM you only need the reference number and the secret code. Take your ID anyway, in case a till asks for it. No bank account or bank card is needed to collect.
Documents and Verification Required
Three things are checked:
- Reference number: shown on the sender’s app after the send. The sender shares it with you through a messaging app such as WhatsApp (SMS also works, at the sender’s own cost).
- Secret code: a 4-digit number chosen by the sender. The sender has to give it to you separately.
- Identification document: your SA ID document at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME and PEP CELL stores, and an appropriate ID as the terms and conditions require.
If you refuse to give the code, the reference number or your ID, or refuse to sign the receipt voucher, Capitec does not have to pay you. You also cannot insist on being paid only part of the amount: the cash is paid as a whole. If the sender needs to change the secret code on an unredeemed send, they can do it on internet banking (Payments, Send Cash, View my Send Cash history, select the voucher, Update secret code) and approve the change in the Capitec app.
Fees, Limits and Service Conditions
The sender pays when the cash is sent, and Capitec says collecting is free at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME, PEP CELL, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, Shoprite and Capitec ATMs. Capitec’s published Send Cash fees are:
- R40 to R1 000: R10 per transaction
- R1 010 to R2 000: R20 per transaction
- R2 010 to R3 000: R30 per transaction
The sender’s limits depend on the channel. In the app the sender can send up to R3 000 per transaction, with a daily limit of R5 000 and R24 990 a month. On USSD (*120*3279#) and internet banking the limit is R1 000 per transaction and per day, and R24 990 a month. The minimum amount is R40, and Capitec says these limits cannot be changed. We found no separate withdrawal limit for the person collecting.
A Send Cash is valid for 30 days. If it is not collected, the amount is paid back into the sender’s account after 30 days, or the recipient can collect it sooner. Capitec says you cannot send cash to someone outside South Africa.
How to Apply, Open or Activate
There is no application for the collector. The sender starts the process in the Capitec app, internet banking or USSD, and chooses a 4-digit secret code. In the app the sender taps Transact, then the send cash button, chooses the account, enters the amount, creates the secret code, taps Send, accepts the terms and confirms. The sender then taps Share Reference Number to pass it on and sends the secret code in a separate message. On USSD the sender dials *120*3279#, replies 2 then 3, accepts the terms and enters the amount, a secret code and their Mobile Banking PIN. On internet banking the sender goes to the payments menu, chooses Send Cash and approves it in the Capitec app.
How to withdraw a cash send at a Capitec ATM
- Choose the cardless or collect-cash option on the Capitec ATM.
- Enter the reference number the sender gave you.
- Enter the 4-digit secret code.

Menu wording can change, so follow the prompts on the ATM screen.
How to withdraw at a partner retailer
Take the reference number and the secret code to the till at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME, PEP CELL, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave or Shoprite, and your South African ID document at Ackermans and PEP stores. Capitec’s Send Cash page lists the participating retailers.

You do not need a Capitec account. You need the reference number and the secret code, and your SA ID document at Ackermans, PEP, PEP HOME and PEP CELL stores. At Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, Shoprite and Capitec ATMs, Capitec says the reference number and code are enough.
What is the Capitec cash send reference number?
It is the number Capitec gives the sender when the cash is sent. The sender shares it with you through a messaging app such as WhatsApp, and sends the secret code in a separate message.
Can I withdraw only part of the amount?
No. The terms and conditions say recipients may not insist on part payment.
Can Capitec tell where a cash send was redeemed?
Capitec’s terms and pages do not say. If you need to know where a specific cash send was collected, ask Capitec’s 24-hour Client Care Centre on 0860 10 20 43, which the terms give as the contact for Send Cash.
What if the code does not work or I did not get the reference number?
Ask the sender to check the SMS and the code they set, and to share them again. If the problem continues, the sender can contact Capitec’s Client Care Centre on 0860 10 20 43.

The sender pays R10 for R40 to R1 000, R20 for R1 010 to R2 000 and R30 for R2 010 to R3 000. Collecting is free for the recipient.
