To study industrial engineering in South Africa you need Mathematics and Physical Sciences at a high level, and a degree-level pass that meets the university’s own APS. For the 2027 intake, Wits asks for APS 42+ with level 5 in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the University of Pretoria (UP) asks for English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 6 and APS 35, and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) asks for APS 30 for its three-year BEngTech.
Industrial engineering focuses on improving systems, processes and operations rather than designing physical products. The figures above are not interchangeable: each institution calculates its APS its own way, so compare your results with each institution’s own table.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
Industrial engineering courses verified for the 2027 intake:
- Wits, BSc (Eng) Industrial Engineering (4 years): APS 42+, English (Home Language or First Additional Language) level 5, Mathematics level 5, Physical Sciences level 5.
- UP, BEng Industrial Engineering: English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 6, APS 35. UP also offers the five-year BEng (previously ENGAGE) route.
- UJ, BEngTech Industrial Engineering (3 years, Doornfontein campus, B6IN2Q): APS 30, English 4 (50%+), Mathematics 5 (60%+), and Physical Science 5 (60%+) or Technical Science 5 (60%+).
- UJ extended Industrial Engineering programme (B6IX2Q, Doornfontein campus): APS 24, English 4 (50%+), Mathematics 5 (60%+).
UCT’s 2027 engineering entry table does not list industrial engineering. Check the Wits course page, UP’s 2027 application requirements tables and the UJ undergraduate admissions page for the latest figures.
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
Two levels apply. Nationally, a bachelor’s degree needs an NSC with at least 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the institution and an achievement rating of 4 (50–59%) or better in four 20-credit subjects. Institutions may set additional requirements, and engineering faculties do.
The qualification types differ in what they lead to:
- A BEng or BSc (Eng) leads towards ECSA registration as a Professional Engineer. ECSA requires an accredited BEng or BSc (Eng) or equivalent, structured practical training, reports and a review.
- A BEngTech leads towards Professional Engineering Technologist, which needs an accredited BEngTech degree or equivalent plus structured work experience.
- A National Diploma leads towards Professional Engineering Technician, which needs an accredited National Diploma or equivalent plus relevant workplace experience.
UP’s five-year BEng asks for 65% in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences and an APS of 33; its first year offers foundation modules. Wits wait-lists applicants with level 5 in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and level 6 in all three gives a greater chance.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
Mathematics and Physical Sciences are the deciding subjects. UJ requires Mathematics (Technical Mathematics for the BEngTech) and Physical or Technical Science, and does not list Mathematical Literacy as an accepted subject. Wits and UP list Mathematics and Physical Sciences for their degrees.
Subject levels are set separately from the APS, so a high total will not make up for a Mathematics or Physical Sciences result below the minimum. UJ calculates its APS from your six best subjects excluding Life Orientation, and the required programme subjects must be among them.
The BEngTech route at UJ accepts Technical Mathematics and Technical Science columns at level 5, so it is not limited to diploma routes. If your marks fall short of the mainstream degree, ask about the extended programmes at UJ and UP.
Documents and Application Requirements
Apply directly to each institution. At Wits, applications are handled by the Student Enrolment Centre: the application, documents and fee must be submitted before the closing date, and you track progress on the Self Service Portal.
At UJ, applications are free. South African applicants with no previous studies do not have to submit supporting documents, transfer applicants submit their academic record, and international applicants submit a certified passport and school results. UJ allows two application choices per year, and Grade 12 learners apply with their final Grade 11 results.
Closing dates for the 2027 intake:
- UP: 30 June 2026 for the engineering faculty. This has closed.
- Wits: 30 September 2026, including residence applications. This has closed.
- UJ: 31 October 2026 at 12:00. This is the one still open, and UJ says no late applications are accepted.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place. Wits wait-lists level 5 applicants subject to space, and UJ ranks applicants on total APS and space availability, with final selection in January on Grade 12 results.
Apply to more than one institution and, where you can, more than one level, for example a degree and a BEngTech, so that a narrow miss on Mathematics does not cost you a year. Before enrolling, confirm that the programme is accredited by ECSA, because registration depends on an accredited qualification.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the industrial engineering requirements in South Africa?
For the 2027 intake, Wits asks for APS 42+ with level 5 in English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences. UP asks for English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 6 and APS 35. UJ’s BEngTech asks for APS 30 with Mathematics 5 and Physical Science 5.
Which courses in industrial engineering can I study?
For 2027 the verified options are Wits BSc (Eng) Industrial Engineering, UP BEng Industrial Engineering, and UJ’s BEngTech Industrial Engineering and its extended programme. UCT’s 2027 engineering table does not list it. Other institutions may offer it, so check their published programme lists.
Can I study industrial engineering with Mathematical Literacy?
No. Mathematics is required, and UJ does not list Mathematical Literacy as an accepted subject. UJ’s BEngTech accepts Technical Mathematics.
Can I still apply for 2027?
UP and Wits have closed. UJ closes on 31 October 2026 at 12:00 and accepts no late applications.
Do I need Physical Sciences?
Yes. Wits and UP require Physical Sciences, and UJ requires Physical Science or, for the BEngTech, Technical Science, at level 5.
Admission requirements, APS minimums and closing dates change with each intake. Confirm them with the institution you are applying to, and confirm programme accreditation and registration categories with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
