Civil engineering requirements in South Africa centre on two subjects: Mathematics and Physical Sciences. For a four-year BEng or BSc (Eng) degree you need a bachelor’s pass with high marks in both. At the University of Pretoria (UP), for example, you need level 6 (70%) in each and an APS of 35. A three-year BEngTech degree or a diploma accepts lower marks. Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for any of the programmes on this page.
The qualification you choose also decides your Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) registration category later, so compare both the entry requirements and where each route leads.
Entry Requirements at a Glance
- UCT BSc (Eng) Civil Engineering (2027): guaranteed offer at a Faculty Points Score (FPS) of 500 out of 600 with Mathematics at least 80% and Physical Sciences at least 70%.
- UP BEng Civil Engineering, 4-year (2027): English 5, Mathematics 6, Physical Sciences 6, APS 35. For the 5-year programme: 65% in each of English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, and an APS of 33.
- UJ BEng in Civil Engineering: APS 32, English 5 (60%), Mathematics or Technical Mathematics 5 (60%), Physical Science 5 (60%).
- UJ BEng Tech in Civil Engineering: APS 28, English 4 (50%), Mathematics or Technical Mathematics 5 (60%), Physical Science or Technical Science 5 (60%).
- Wits BSc (Eng) Civil Engineering: APS 42+, with English (Home Language or First Additional Language), Mathematics and Physical Sciences each at Level 5 minimum. Level 5 applicants are wait-listed, subject to space.
- UJ extended BEngTech in Civil Engineering: APS 26, with English, Mathematics and Physical Science at level 4 (50%+).
Academic and Minimum Admission Requirements
There are three levels of civil engineering qualification, and each one leads to a different ECSA professional category:
- BEng or BSc (Eng), four years, NQF level 8: ECSA’s educational requirement for registration as a Professional Engineer is an accredited BEng or BSc (Eng) or equivalent. UJ’s BEng is 480 credits over four years at its Auckland Park Kingsway campus.
- BEngTech, three years, NQF level 7: the educational base for registration as a Professional Engineering Technologist. UJ runs its BEng Tech in Civil Engineering at the Doornfontein campus and also offers an extended version.
- Diploma, NQF level 6: prepares you to work as a civil engineering technician. ECSA’s educational requirement for a Professional Engineering Technician is an accredited National Diploma or equivalent, so check that the diploma you choose is accredited.
Some institutions also accept N4 or NQF level 4 qualifications instead of a current NSC. Ask the institution whether your certificate qualifies before you apply.
Subjects, APS and Qualification Requirements
The subject minimums matter more than the total score. At UP, an APS of 35 does not get you in if your Mathematics or Physical Sciences mark is below level 6. At UCT, you need the subject percentages as well as the points score in every offer band.
How UCT scores civil engineering applicants
UCT does not use the usual APS. Its FPS is out of 600: your percentages for English, Mathematics and Physical Sciences plus your next three best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. For 2027, civil engineering has three offer bands:
- Band A (admission guaranteed): FPS 500
- Band B (admission likely): weighted point score (WPS) of 480. The WPS adds a disadvantage factor of 0% to 10% to your FPS, based on your school and family background. It applies only to South African citizens and permanent residents.
- Band C (admission possible): FPS 420, for applicants in UCT’s redress categories 1 and 2
Every band requires Mathematics at 80% or more and Physical Sciences at 70% or more. You must also write the National Benchmark Tests (Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy and Mathematics). The faculty does not use NBT results in its admission decision, but you still have to write them.
Which Mathematics and Science subjects count
Rules differ by institution. UCT does not accept Technical Mathematics in place of Mathematics or Technical Sciences in place of Physical Sciences. UJ accepts Technical Mathematics for both its BEng and BEngTech, and Technical Science for the BEngTech. None of these programmes accepts Mathematical Literacy.
Documents and Application Requirements
Apply online to each university directly. Prepare:
- A copy of your ID or passport
- Your final Grade 11 results if you are in Grade 12, or your final NSC (or equivalent) results if you have finished school
- For N4, NQF level 4 or older Senior Certificate routes: the certificate and full results
- For school-leaving certificates not issued by Umalusi: the documents set out in each university’s international admission guidelines
Deadlines for 2027 entry differ a lot. UP’s closing date for engineering was 30 June 2026 and Wits’ was 30 September 2026, so both have passed. UJ accepts applications for its BEng and BEngTech in Civil Engineering from 1 April until 31 October 2026 at 12:00. Check each institution before you plan around one date.
Selection, Intake and Eligibility Considerations
Civil engineering places are limited, and minimums are floors, not targets. UP ranks applicants on final Grade 11 or 12 results and says meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. It gives feedback by mid-August, and you must accept or decline an offer by 30 September. MUT admits diploma applicants on an entrance test, merit and available space.
If you miss the BEng cut-off, you have several options:
- UP’s 5-year BEng programme, which has a lower entry bar (65% in the key subjects, APS 33)
- A BEngTech or diploma, which leads to technologist or technician registration
- MUT’s 4-year extended diploma, which has a supported foundation year, or its Access Programme. The Access Programme is a bridging course that asks for English, Mathematics and Physical Science at level 3.
- At UP, a related BSc first. You can move into the 4-year BEng after first year if you reach 70% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences and 65% for languages.
Your degree is only the start. To register as a Professional Engineer, you usually register first as a Candidate Engineer with ECSA. You then complete a structured period of practical training and pass ECSA’s experience appraisal and professional review interview.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the UCT civil engineering requirements?
For 2027, UCT guarantees a place in BSc (Eng) Civil Engineering at an FPS of 500, with Mathematics at least 80% and Physical Sciences at least 70%. Offers are likely at a WPS of 480 and possible at an FPS of 420 for redress categories 1 and 2. You must write the NBTs.
What are the requirements for the Diploma in Surveying at MUT?
MUT’s Diploma in Surveying (NQF level 6, 360 credits) is run by its Department of Civil Engineering and Survey. You need an NSC with English at level 4 or 5, Mathematics 4 and Physical Science 4, and at least 20 points. An NQF level 4 qualification of at least 130 credits also qualifies you. Admission also depends on an entrance test. A 4-year extended version is available.
Can I study civil engineering with Mathematical Literacy?
Not at UCT, UP, UJ or MUT. You need Mathematics, and some institutions also accept Technical Mathematics. If you took Mathematical Literacy, one option is to upgrade to Mathematics before you apply.
How long does it take to become a civil engineer?
The BEng or BSc (Eng) takes four years full time, or five on UP’s extended programme. After that you need ECSA candidacy and a structured training period before you can register as a Professional Engineer.
What is the difference between a BEng and a BEngTech in civil engineering?
A BEng is a four-year NQF level 8 degree that leads to Professional Engineer registration. A BEngTech is a three-year NQF level 7 degree that leads to Professional Engineering Technologist registration. The BEngTech usually needs a lower APS; at UJ it is 28, against 32 for the BEng.
Admission figures are revised each cycle. Confirm them on UCT’s engineering entrance requirements page, UP’s BEng Civil Engineering page, UJ’s BEng in Civil Engineering page or the MUT Department of Civil Engineering and Survey. Check professional registration rules with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
