Zanzibar Visa Requirements

Most travelers to Zanzibar require a visa, as Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania. As of early 2025, the standard way to obtain a visa is via the online Tanzania eVisa system. The visa-on-arrival option has largely been phased out and it is strongly recommended to apply beforehand, especially given recent regulatory updates[3].

How to apply for a Zanzibar visa online:

  • Go to the official Tanzania Immigration Services website and select the eVisa option[1].
  • Complete the online application form with your personal information, travel dates, and purpose of visit[2].
  • Upload a scanned copy of your passport’s data page (passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date), a recent passport photo, and any travel documents such as hotel bookings and return or onward tickets[3].
  • Pay the visa fee: typically $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa (multiple entry, business, or U.S. citizens may pay higher fees)[3].
  • Submit your application and wait for email confirmation and the eVisa approval (processing can take up to 10 business days). Print the approved visa to present on arrival[3].

Additional requirements for Zanzibar:

  • Mandatory travel insurance: From October 1, 2024, a special insurance policy from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) is required for all visitors; this costs about $45 and can be bought online or at the airport[3].
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate: Required if arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever risk[3].
  • Passport requirements: Your passport must have at least six months’ validity beyond your intended stay and at least two blank pages for stamping[3].

Special notes for minors:

  • A copy of the child’s birth certificate
  • A parental consent letter if the child is traveling without both parents[3].

Certain nationalities are exempt from the visa requirement and others may need to apply at a Tanzanian embassy. Check the official website to confirm your specific requirements based on your nationality[1].
