Wits Minimum Requirements

To be considered for entry into Wits University undergraduate programmes, applicants must have one of the following school-leaving qualifications: the National Senior Certificate (NSC), the National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV), the Senior Certificate (as Amended), or a recognized international equivalent[1].

The core minimum requirements for entry with a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) are:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree pass level[1].
  • Matriculation subjects must meet specific levels of achievement set by each faculty/programme[1].
  • English must be passed as Home Language or First Additional Language[1].
  • An Admission Points Score (APS) is used to assess eligibility, calculated from the applicant’s best seven subjects, including Life Orientation[1].
  • For most degree programmes, the minimum APS required is 30, but most accepted students achieve higher (average APS of 34 or above)[3][6].
  • Mathematics is compulsory for most Science, Engineering, Commerce, and Health Sciences programmes. However, Mathematical Literacy is accepted for some programmes in Law, Education, and Humanities (excluding Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology)[1].
  • Applicants may only have one Matric upgrade/rewrite for consideration[1].

In addition to the general requirements, some programmes have further specific requirements:

  • National Benchmark Test (NBT) results are required for certain degrees (e.g., BSc, Health Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology). Only the first attempt in the most recent year is considered[5].
  • Some programmes (e.g., Fine Arts, Music, Film and TV, Theatre and Performance) require auditions, portfolios, or questionnaires[5].
  • For Health Sciences, job shadowing certificates are mandatory for specified degrees[5].
  • Bachelor of Architectural Studies requires application exercises[5].

Applicants must also:

  • Apply online by the specified deadlines (30 June for certain programmes, 30 September for others)[2][4].
  • Pay a non-refundable application fee (R100 for South African citizens, R700 for international applicants)[2][4].
  • Upload supporting documents (final Grade 11 results for current matrics, or matric certificates for graduates; academic transcripts and conduct certificates for tertiary studies)[2][4].

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as selection is highly competitive and dependent on the availability of places, programme-specific criteria, and overall applicant performance[1][7].
