Uk Student Visa Requirements

You can apply for a UK Student visa if you are 16 or over and you:

  • have an offer of a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor
  • have enough money to support yourself and pay for your course (the amount required depends on your circumstances)
  • can speak, read, write, and understand English
  • have parental consent if you are 16 or 17, with evidence provided at application

This visa is required to study in the UK at degree level or above and has replaced the former Tier 4 (General) student visa[7].

To apply for a Student visa, you must:

  • Complete an online application form
  • Prove your identity by either using the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app or by attending a visa application centre for biometrics (fingerprints and a photo)
  • Submit your original passport and all supporting documents (either originals or scanned copies, depending on the process)
  • Attend a scheduled appointment, where you might be required to undertake a credibility interview
  • If successful, you will receive an eVisa (an online record of your immigration status); those enrolling biometrics after 15 July 2025 will not receive a 90-day vignette

The earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts if applying from outside the UK, or 3 months before if applying from within the UK. Decisions usually take 3 weeks from outside the UK or 8 weeks from inside the UK[1][3].

You will need to provide several documents, including:

  • Original passport
  • Original qualification evidence as stated in your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
  • Evidence of your English proficiency (e.g., Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate, if required by your CAS)
  • Financial evidence showing you can support yourself and pay for your course (there are exceptions for some nationalities or if previously provided)
  • ATAS certificate if referenced in your CAS (mainly for certain postgraduate courses in science and technology)

You are expected to include all mandatory and other relevant documents to avoid delays at the Visa Centre[5].

English language requirements:

  • You must prove you can read, write, speak, and understand English to a certain level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale:
    • Degree level or above: Equivalent to CEFR level B2
    • Below degree level: CEFR level B1
  • This can be demonstrated by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, holding a degree or equivalent taught in English, or other specific academic qualifications completed in the UK
  • Certain nationals (including from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other specified majority English-speaking countries) are exempt from providing evidence of English proficiency[2][4][6].

You may also be contacted for further information or interviews if your application is complex or your supporting documents require additional verification[3].
