Uj Social Work Requirements

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers social work qualifications at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, each with specific admission requirements and selection processes.

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Admission Requirements:

Postgraduate Admission Requirements for Social Work:

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a three-year degree in Social Work plus an Honours degree in Social Work. In some cases, applicants from related disciplines may be considered, though this will not qualify them for registration as social workers.[3]
  • An average mark of at least 65% in the final year or Honours degree (applicants with marks in the low 60s may be considered under exceptional circumstances with supporting evidence, e.g., academic publications).[1]
  • Applicants must undergo a selection process, which may include a writing task and interview.[1]
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions is required for those wishing to practice as social workers upon graduation.[3]

MA in Clinical Social Work (Coursework) and MA in Social Work (Research):

  • Applicants require a fourth-year or Honours degree in Social Work with a minimum average of 65%.
  • Admission is subject to a selection process that may include assessments of prior academic performance, a writing task, and interview.[1][2]
  • Selection for the research-based MA relies on academic credit.[2]

International applicants must provide final school results and certified English translations of documents where applicable.[6]
