Uj Entry Requirements

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) requires both local and international applicants to meet specific academic and administrative criteria for admission into its undergraduate programmes.

  • Applications open on 1 April in the year before intended study and close on 31 October at 12:00. Applications can be submitted online for free[1].
  • Applicants may apply for two study choices per academic year. These choices cannot be changed once submitted[3].
  • For undergraduate degree programmes, a valid National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s degree endorsement and a minimum Admission Points Score (APS)—commonly 26, excluding Life Orientation for many programmes—are typically required. However, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as there are limited spaces[5][7].
  • Applicants with a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 must have certain subject achievements (e.g., three fundamental subjects at 60–69%, including English, and three vocational subjects at 70–79%) to qualify[5].
  • International applicants must submit final school results, a valid passport or identity document, and a sworn English translation of documents not issued in English[1][2].
  • If English was not the medium of instruction, proof of English proficiency is required. UJ prefers an IELTS score of 6 or a TOEFL score between 80–104 for undergraduate programmes; alternatively, the UJ English Language Programme Test (UJELP) is accepted, requiring an overall score of 6[1].
  • International applicants must obtain the equivalent of a South African National Senior Certificate with a degree endorsement or conditional exemption from the Matriculation Board (USAf). They must also have a study visa aligned with the Immigration Act for registration[2].
  • All international students need medical aid cover registered in South Africa and paid up in full for the academic year[4].
  • For applicants with non-South African post-secondary qualifications wishing to do postgraduate study, credentials must be evaluated by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA)[6].
  • The American GED is not accepted for direct entry; applicants with a GED must achieve a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or approved international equivalent[3].
