Saps Weight Requirements

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has specific weight and physical requirements for applicants. All candidates must submit to a physical medical examination and be found physically and mentally fit for the role. A key weight-related requirement is that applicants must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30. Additionally, male applicants must have a waist circumference of 102 cm or less, and female applicants must have a waist circumference of 88 cm or less[1].

Applicants are also required to undergo dynamic strength and endurance fitness testing to ensure they can perform duties as a police officer, though the standard does not demand exceptionally high levels of fitness[4]. These assessments typically include running, push-ups, sit-ups, and shuttle runs, with the specific requirements varying slightly between roles[2]. The SAPS physical fitness assessment must also be retaken every 6 to 9 months for serving officers, unless exempted by valid reasons[5].

Preparation for these requirements includes engaging in cardiovascular and resistance training, building stamina, and maintaining healthy eating habits to not only meet but also sustain the BMI and waist circumference criteria[2].
