Pgce Uwc Requirements

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) is designed for applicants who have already completed an undergraduate degree and wish to become qualified teachers of Grades 10-12 (Further Education and Training, FET phase)[4].

Admission Requirements for the UWC PGCE:

  • Applicants must have completed an approved undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification recognized by UWC Senate)[4].
  • The undergraduate degree must include sufficient academic content relevant to the subject(s) you wish to teach according to Department of Higher Education and Training requirements[4].
  • Applicants are generally expected to have achieved at least a Level 4 (50-59%) in the area of specialisation at Grade 12 or have adequate prior learning in the chosen subject area at university level[3].
  • Final selection depends on specific criteria determined by the Faculty of Education and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission[3].

Application Process and Deadlines:

  • Applicants must complete the UWC online postgraduate application form and submit all required documents (degree transcripts, ID, etc.) by 30 September for the following academic year[6].
  • Contact details for programme or curriculum queries are provided through the Faculty of Education (e.g., vndabeni@uwc.ac.za or tplaatjies@uwc.ac.za)[4].
  • Successful applicants will receive an offer which must be accepted online within three (3) days, as per UWC registration processes[5].

Additional Requirements and Selection Information:

  • For certain learning area specialisations (like Social Sciences or Economics), specific subject results at Grade 12 or undergraduate level may be required[3].
  • All selection is at the discretion of the Faculty, and capacity limitations apply[3].
