A paramedic is a healthcare professional trained in the medical model, whose main role has historically been to respond to emergency calls for medical help outside of a hospital. Paramedics work as part of the emergency medical services, most often in ambulances.

What subjects are needed to be a paramedic?
You need to have passed maths, science and biology as matric subjects in order to be eligible for the three types of courses currently available. Apart from rigorous study, paramedics also need to be prepared to challenge themselves when it comes to physical fitness and rescue training.
How long does it take to study paramedic?
Diploma in Emergency Medical Care. This will be a two-year course, or only one year if the ECO has been completed. Bachelor of health sciences- this is a four-year course provided at universities. It is level NQF8 and equips the paramedic with all the necessary skills to practice as advanced life support.
Can I become a paramedic without matric?
In most cases, no you cannot become a paramedic without a matric certificate. EMT training for paramedics you unfortunately do need to have a matric certificate. Once you have your matric certificate, there are different paths that can be taken such as studying full-time or getting in-service training.
