To maintain or qualify for NSFAS funding in 2025, students must meet specific academic pass requirements depending on whether they are studying at a university or a TVET college[1][3]:
- University students: Returning NSFAS-funded university students must pass at least 50% of their modules from the previous academic year to continue being eligible for funding. First-year students must have passed their matric with admission to a bachelor, diploma, or higher certificate programme[3].
- TVET College students:
- To progress to the next NC(V) (National Certificate: Vocational) level, students must pass at least 5 subjects at the previous NC(V) level[1][5].
- To progress to the next Report 191 (N-level) programme, students must pass a minimum of 3 subjects at the previous N-level[1][5].
- For occupational programmes, TVET colleges determine the academic progression requirements and report results to NSFAS[1].
All students must comply with the “N+” rule: the maximum period for NSFAS funding is the minimum time required to complete the qualification (N), plus two additional years (N+2). Exceeding this limit results in defunding, though reapplication may be possible after meeting recovery criteria[1][3][5].
In addition, students must be registered for a NSFAS-approved qualification at a public university or TVET college, and not exceed the outer limits set by academic progression policies, otherwise funding will be withdrawn[1][3].
