The requirements for admission to the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) are as follows[7]:
- For applicants with a Senior Certificate (when the symbol system was still in use): Matriculation exemption is legally required (facilitated by the Matriculation Board of University South Africa). Applicants must have an M-score of at least 10 and a minimum of an E symbol on Higher Grade, or a D symbol on Standard Grade, for English, Mathematics, Biology/Physiology, and Physical Sciences.
- For applicants with a National Certificate: A minimum pass of 60% is required in English, Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
- For applicants with a National Senior Certificate: The diploma endorsement is required and applicants must have passed the following subjects with at least Level 3 (“Moderate Achievement”) in each:
- English: Level 3
- Mathematics: Level 3
- Life Sciences: Level 3
- Physical Sciences: Level 3
- Two additional subjects: Level 3 each
- The total score across the relevant subjects must be a minimum of 18 points.
- Applicants must also pass Medical Fitness and Physical Fitness Evaluations.
- The duration of the program is 2 years.
